It is merely refuting what does not exist. If one possesses mantra vows, it is necessary to have the three vows. This seems to be solely the tradition explained by the venerable Sakya father and sons, without any inversion of the meaning of the sutras and tantras. As the Vajrasekhara Sutra states: "Abiding in the three vows is said to be the first initiation." Also, as the First Holy One Sutra states: "The basis is threefold: the bhikshu is supreme, the shramanera is considered intermediate, and the householder is the lowest." Thus it is taught. The meaning of being a householder is also stated in the Vajrasekhara Sutra: "Abandoning killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and alcohol, abiding well in the householder's vows, one should diligently practice the king of secret mantras." This explains guarding the five precepts of a lay follower. Furthermore, the Bahushruta Sutra states: "The Victorious One has spoken of the Pratimoksha vows, all vows and commitments, the mantra householder abandons signs and attire, and should adopt the remaining ones." Thus it says. In the Sutra Determining the Three Vows, it states: "One should act in accordance with the Pratimoksha as it is taught. O Audaka, those who think to act contrary to the Pratimoksha, they are thinking to act contrary to the Buddha's qualities, powers, and fearlessness." Moreover, Acharya Manjushrikirti says: "Without the ritual of the three vows, one does not transform into the nature of a mantrika." And so on, although it is clearly stated, other traditions seem not to have even engaged in investigation. In this tradition, whether the lower two vows existed previously or not, at the time of obtaining the mantra vows, it is established that one possesses the three vows. The example of the alchemical elixir mentioned in the tantras is an example of both the transformation of vows and the identity of essence. Just as when iron, copper, and silver are touched by the alchemical elixir, the different substances of iron and so on cease to exist, and all become a mass of gold, so too, when the three trainings of the three lineages are embraced by the mantra vows, the training of the Shravakas and so on cease to be different, and all become solely the training of the Vajrayana. However, there is no fault of not needing to train in the training of those vows previously taken, because the bhikshu Vajradhara
