Then it should be done like this: the purity of a Bodhisattva is said to be purified by the obscurations of the three vehicles' paths, and the distinction that the purity of a Buddha is extremely pure is unreasonable. Because there is no object to be abandoned that is separate from the objects to be abandoned on the path of the three vehicles. If you ask this, there is no fault. The three obscurations abandoned by the purity of a Bodhisattva are: the afflictive obscurations that reside in the category of what is to be abandoned by the Hearers, the conceptual grasping of the cognitive obscurations that reside in the category of what is to be abandoned by the Solitary Realizers, and the first part of what is to be abandoned by the Great Vehicle, the obscurations to be abandoned by seeing and the obscurations to be abandoned by meditation. It has not abandoned the latter part of the obscurations to be abandoned by meditation. The purity of a Buddha abandons it, therefore it is established as extremely pure. The purity of a Bodhisattva has not abandoned the cognitive obscurations to be abandoned by meditation that reside in the category of what is to be abandoned by a Bodhisattva. If you ask what is the reason that the purity of a Buddha abandons it? Because the former has not abandoned it. Because there are nine paths for a Bodhisattva from the path of seeing, the path of liberation, to the path of liberation of the ninth ground, the former has not abandoned even a little of the cognitive obscurations to be abandoned by meditation that reside in the category of what is to be abandoned by a Bodhisattva. The latter has not abandoned even the smallest of the cognitive obscurations to be abandoned by meditation. The purity of a Buddha abandons it. Because the nine uninterrupted paths of the Great Vehicle are capable of being the actual antidote to the nine classes of cognitive obscurations to be abandoned by meditation in the three realms. The purity of a Buddha occurs after all of these are perfected. As it is said, "The ninth ground is great," and so on. The reason that if it is the purity of a Bodhisattva, it is pervaded by being purified by the three obscurations of the path of the three vehicles is: the minimum of the purity of a Bodhisattva, from the path of seeing, the path of liberation, when it is recognized, it has already abandoned all four aspects of the grasping at appearances of the obscurations to be abandoned by seeing. And the way in which the categories of what is to be abandoned by the three vehicles are included within it has already been explained. Also, the abandonment of the earlier and earlier parts of the obscurations to be abandoned by meditation of the later pure meditation paths is included within the abandonment of what is to be abandoned on the path of the Great Vehicle, therefore it is not necessary to mention it separately. Here there are three things: the recognition of the obscurations to be abandoned, the recognition of the antidote that abandons, and the way of combining the abandonment and the antidote. The first is, "The ninth ground is great."
