Yi. Great, etc., defilements! The nine grounds are the three realms, nine grounds from the desire realm to the peak of existence. The 'Two Appearances' says, 'That is, the nine grounds included by the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm.' The 'Small Commentary' says, 'The desire realm, meditative concentration, and the formless realm, these are the nine grounds.' Therefore, each of the nine grounds is divided into nine types, such as the very great of the great to be abandoned in meditation, making a total of eighty-one, which is the definite number of what is to be abandoned here. The 'Two Appearances' says, 'For each of these nine grounds, there are distinctions such as the very great of the great.' If you say that this contradicts the explanation of nine, it does not contradict because it is done in terms of each ground. If you say that this contradicts the explanation of four or thirty-six to be abandoned in meditation in the fifth chapter, that itself has the same meaning as this. That is, for each of the thirty-six types of apprehension and conceptualization included by the desire ground, here also, the very great of the great to be abandoned in meditation included by the desire ground, etc., are established as nine, and it is the same up to the peak of existence. The second is: The path of the very small antidote, etc., is pure. That is, the nine uninterrupted paths from the second ground to the tenth ground. The third is: The nine types of meditation abandonment of the three realms and nine grounds are abandoned in sequence by the nine meditation paths, and the nine types of meditation abandonment of each ground are abandoned in sequence by the nine meditation paths, not exceeding either of these two. Because the scriptures explicitly state that the nine types of meditation abandonment of the three realms and nine grounds, such as the very great of the great, are abandoned in sequence by the nine types of meditation path, such as the very small of the small, there is no other way to do it besides these two. Thus, in the two systems, the former is not reasonable. Because in that case, it would be necessary to establish the meditation abandonment of the desire realm as the very great of the great, and the meditation abandonment of the peak of existence as the very small of the small, and such a statement has not been mentioned in any scripture. And, each ground has the same nine types, such as the very great of the great, so it is not reasonable from a logical point of view. Therefore, there is no choice but the latter system, so there are eighty-one meditation abandonments of the nine grounds. Therefore, the meditation path of the Great Vehicle also becomes eighty-one from the opposite point of view.

Gathered into nine aspects through the means of grounds. From the second ground's uninterrupted path, simultaneously abandoning the greatest of the great meditative obscurations included by the desire realm, up to the greatest of the great meditative obscurations included by the peak of existence, all nine at once. From the tenth ground's uninterrupted path, simultaneously abandoning the smallest of the small knowable obscurations that are to be abandoned through meditation, included by the desire realm, up to the smallest of the small knowable obscurations that are to be abandoned through meditation, included by the peak of existence, all nine at once. That Bodhisattvas simultaneously abandon knowable obscurations by types is also established from other treatises. Among Hearers, there are two types: keen and dull faculties. If the keen ones can simultaneously abandon afflictive obscurations by types, then among the three types of Bodhisattvas, since their nature is of keen faculties, it is established that they simultaneously abandon knowable obscurations by types. Regarding the manner of refuting objections, the Teacher said, "On the nine grounds, it is great." In that context, it is said that the antidotes arise from small to large, and the objects to be abandoned cease from large to small. If one says that such a sequence of abandonment and antidote is not reasonable, then it is reasonable by the example of how a washer removes coarse dirt attached to clothes with little effort, while fine dirt requires great effort to remove. This is indicated by "There, objections are refuted." Having thus refuted objections, the meditative path of Bodhisattvas is one whose object is the understanding of the equality of the knowledge and knowable of the three realms. Therefore, it is established as the antidote to all knowable obscurations that are to be abandoned through meditation. This is indicated by "The path is measure," and so forth. In the Ornament for Clear Realization, it is said, "The nature of the three realms, measure and measurable are equal. There, objections are refuted, it is accepted as the antidote." Having thus shown, the object of contention is in the context of "On the nine grounds, it is great," where the classification of abandonment and antidote is spoken of, and in "Measure and measurable are equal," where the equality of the measurer and the measured is shown. The manner of contention is that the measurer and the measured being equal is unreasonable, because by way of distinguishing between what is to be abandoned and the antidote, what is to be abandoned ceases from large to small, and the antidote arises from small to large. The answer to this is that the Perfection of Wisdom neither benefits nor harms the omniscient, because in ultimate reality, the abandonment of
