Sixteen moments of knowledge and acceptance were taught with the special characteristic of being superior. In the fifth chapter, the section on the body, the four applications of the peak of the path of seeing are taught as antidotes to the four types of conceptual thought to be abandoned on the path of seeing. In that very extensive explanation of the limbs, it is taught that it is only one moment condensed by acceptance. Among the treatises translated into Tibetan, there is no more extensive presentation of the path of seeing in the Great Vehicle than this. Although it is unique to other systems, mixing this presentation with what is explained in the upper and lower Abhidharma is like walking from the gate of existence to the alley of non-existence. The third part has two aspects: stating the views of others and showing the teacher's own intention. The first is: Some say that when one knows the nature of suffering, one abandons the origin with the acceptance of the dharma of suffering, and with that one manifests cessation, and with that one makes the path familiar. Moreover, that is accomplished from one moment of mind, so it is established as one in relation to the manifestation of the result. From individual manifestation, there are sixteen moments, because for each of the four truths, many reversed thoughts arise, so the wisdom that eliminates those reversed thoughts also arises as many. In that case, the establishment of entering and abiding is also well established. So it is said. Others say: The self-nature of the meaning is one, the self is manifest, what is there to examine by the valid cognitions? What other unseen part is there? In this way, with one moment of wisdom, one directly sees the nature of all truths, therefore, from individual manifestation, it is also one moment. So they say. Second, in the Great Commentary, the later school's establishment of entering and abiding is refuted as unreasonable, and the establishment as one's own school is: Like silver patterns on fish skin, if it is not because of the reason of confusion, other qualities will not be applied. Like this, if there were no reversed superimpositions on the truth, the truth would be completely manifested by merely seeing it, but because there are many reversed superimpositions on the truth, the wisdom that eliminates those reversed superimpositions enters as many, so it will become like this: For the four truths that have no nature of parts and no division of seeing and not seeing

Because of seeing the nature of reality simultaneously, even if it is only a moment in seeing the path, one can gradually obtain sixteen kinds of definitive understanding that can eliminate superimposition, so it is said to be sixteen. As stated in the Ṭīkā (Sanskrit Devanagari: टीका, Sanskrit Romanization: ṭīkā, Chinese literal meaning: commentary), this seems to fully accord with the intention of the Great Commentary. Fourth, it is explained from the following seven aspects: the self-cognized direct realization is shown as one, it appears as sixteen moments before other consciousnesses, there is no difference in seeing the nature of reality, there are differences in the way of guiding definitive understanding, the differences between the two paths are established separately, the differences between the previous and subsequent stages are established separately, and the way of obtaining other qualities. First, from the arising of the samadhi of the path of seeing, until one has not arisen from that samadhi, there is no difference between the previous and subsequent moments before that consciousness. Because that consciousness mainly holds the meaning of dependent arising, without arising or ceasing, and directly sees it. If one sees the difference between the previous and subsequent moments, then one must see the previous moment cease and the subsequent moment arise. Considering this, the Holy Nāgārjuna, in terms of the way that consciousness sees reality, declared that there is no difference when realizing the dharma of dependent arising without arising or ceasing. Therefore, the meaning of that statement is: first knowing that the three truths are the nature of arising and ceasing, and that nirvana is inseparable from this. Before one has not arisen from that samadhi, if there is a difference between the previous and subsequent moments before that consciousness, then that consciousness becomes unskilled in the meaning of the extremely subtle object without arising or ceasing, because it appears as arising and ceasing, because it separately imputes the arising of the subsequent moment after the previous moment. If one admits this, then one has not seen the meaning of arising from causes and conditions, the meaning of dependent arising without arising or ceasing. That is its meaning. If so, then it is also unreasonable for direct realization to be one, because direct realization does not appear as one before that consciousness either. If one thinks so, then there is no fault, because it is true that that consciousness realizes the dharma of non-arising and non-ceasing in the way that the two appear and disappear, and it is only established as direct realization as one from the aspect of not appearing the difference between the previous and subsequent moments. This view is the common view of the three vehicles.
