Having aggregates and not having aggregates. Regarding the meaning of what was said, some scholars of the past said that the first nine are the objects to be focused on, the middle six are the nature of enjoyment, and the last two show the result. In the "Upper Commentary on the Grounds," it says: "Nature and how to enter, its state and time, order and what is attained, in it, it is the goer." If explained as such, considering the nature of the individual, it is the first two grounds. Because the individual who practices is also placed in the continuum of the eight consciousnesses. Considering how to enter, it is the three grounds of having investigation and analysis, etc. That individual enters with both investigation and analysis up to just a small part of the actual first dhyana. In special times, it enters without investigation but only with analysis. Above the second dhyana, it enters without both investigation and analysis. Considering its state, it is the four grounds of having samadhi, etc. That individual has samadhi in the form and formless realms, does not have samadhi in the desire realm, and in the state of the two attainments, etc., there is no mind, and other than that, there is mind. Considering the order, it is the three grounds of hearing, thinking, and meditating. Because it is necessary to enter those three in order. Considering what is attained, it is the three grounds of the hearers, etc. Because the vehicle to be attained is condensed into three. Considering going in it, it is the remaining two. Such an individual also ultimately goes to the two nirvanas by the three vehicles. In the two Compendiums, the Compendium of Topics is a compendium of the common vehicle. Because it commonly explains the establishment of the meaning of external objects with the hearers, and the establishment of the three natures and the eight consciousnesses, etc., with the Mind-Only school. The Compendium of the Great Vehicle is a compendium of the uncommon Great Vehicle. Because the ten dharmas such as the place of knowable things explained there are only the establishment of the basis, path, and result according to the Mind-Only school. Below that is the treatise composed by Master Vasubandhu in his own continuum.

Five things, and three commentaries with attached annotations. From the eight treatises composed, the earlier scholars divided the meaning of these into three parts: showing the view of the Mind-Only school, its arguments, and refuting objections to it. The first part is the analysis of the Thirty Verses, in order to summarize all the processes of phenomena and beings into three natures and to show the two selflessnesses. The second part is the analysis of the Twenty Verses, in order to show the argument that all appearances are mind. The third part is the remaining analyses. If all appearances are mind, then the establishment of the five aggregates would become unreasonable. To refute this objection, there is the Analysis of the Five Aggregates. If karma becomes unreasonable, to refute this objection, there is the Analysis Establishing Karma. If listening and teaching become unreasonable, to refute this objection, there is the Explanation of Terms. If the three natures become unreasonable, to refute this objection, there is the Commentary on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes. If the twelve links of dependent origination become unreasonable, to refute this objection, there is the Commentary on the Sutra of Dependent Origination. If the practice of the six perfections for one's own benefit and the four ways of gathering disciples for the benefit of others become unreasonable, to refute this objection, there is the Commentary on the Ornament of the Sutras, they declared. However, if the author of the treatise had considered such an intention in advance and wrote in this order, then such an establishment would be reasonable. But if they wanted to write treatises explaining a particular subject, then there is no necessity to make such an establishment, I think. Furthermore, why are the Commentary on the Ratnagotravibhāga by the noble Asanga and the Commentary on the Distinguishing of Dharma and Dharmata by the master Vasubandhu not counted as Dharma teachings related to Maitreya? He smiled, as if ready to express his profound opinion. Second, from those five things, there are two ways to explain the sutras with the five things: the way to explain the words and the way to explain the meaning. The first way has three aspects: the necessity of the sutra to be explained, the way to explain it, and the necessity of combining it with the sutra. First, the sutra to be explained here is the uncommon collection of the Mahayana, which is further divided into sutras that need to be guided and sutras of definitive meaning.
