The three, such as Sravakas, are the same in realizing selflessness, and the same in the result of liberation from afflictions. Some Sravakas of uncertain lineage later entered the Mahayana path and attained the result, so they attained two different results because of different lineages. The Buddhas think that they became Buddhas because they practiced the conduct of Bodhisattvas in the past. Similarly, some Sravakas of uncertain lineage, who had previously studied the Mahayana path, when they later attained their own Bodhi, would have a slight thought that they would become Buddhas because they had practiced the conduct of Bodhisattvas in the past. Also, for the sake of Sravakas, the Buddha manifested as a Sravaka, and spoke of one vehicle in view of the ultimate vehicle to be traveled. As the Ornament of Sutras says: "Because Dharma and selflessness are equal, because lineages are different, because of attaining two thoughts, because of manifestation, because of the ultimate, therefore it is one vehicle." Secondly, it is said that the one vehicle is taught in order to guide those of uncertain Hinayana lineage into the Mahayana, and to properly lead those of uncertain Bodhisattva lineage into the Mahayana path. As the Ornament of Sutras says: "To guide some, and also to lead all into it, the perfect Buddhas have shown one vehicle to the uncertain ones." Thirdly, after the Hinayana attains Nirvana without remainder, it does not enter the Mahayana path, because there the activity of conditioned things is cut off, and because the cause of rebirth in Samsara, afflictions, has been exhausted. The Samdhinirmocana Sutra says: "A person of the Sravaka lineage, who only goes to peace, even if all the Buddhas are diligent, cannot be established in the heart of Bodhi and attain unsurpassed complete Bodhi. Why? Because they have very little compassion and are extremely afraid of suffering, and because their nature is only of inferior lineage." Secondly, the ultimate is established as three vehicles, as the Sutra on the Differentiation of Realms says: "Because of showing that sentient beings have various realms, and because the realms are different, the faith and understanding are different at first, and therefore the practice in the middle is different, and therefore the final result is also different."

It says in the Ornament (རྒྱན་): "Because of the elements and the faith, and because of the differences in practice, and because of the different objects of the fruits, it is said that there is the principle of having lineage." Thus it is said. Second, refuting that (three lineages) and ultimately establishing the One Vehicle. There are two ways to establish it: through scriptural authority and through reasoning. First, regarding scriptural authority, the 《Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra》 says: "Great Wisdom! The vehicles of the Śrāvakas are not liberated by the vehicle of the Śrāvakas, but they are the ultimate of the Great Vehicle." And the 《Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka Sūtra》 says: "The great sage taught the three vehicles, the guide is skilled in means, there is one vehicle and no second, for the sake of taming, he taught the three vehicles." Thus it is said. Second (establishing through reasoning) has three parts: establishing the reason for certainty in one vehicle; refuting the reason for certainty in three vehicles; and eliminating the fault of contradicting the scriptures that speak of three vehicles. First, the ultimate is established as one vehicle, because the Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not have ultimate abandonment and realization, because if one does not obtain the ultimate abandonment and realization, one will not obtain the ultimate nirvāṇa. The 《Ratnagotravibhāga》 says: "Therefore, before attaining Buddhahood, one cannot attain parinirvāṇa, just as one cannot see the sun after abandoning light and rays." Thus it is said. Again, the ultimate is established as one vehicle, because if one does not ultimately realize the Dharmadhātu, one will not obtain the ultimate nirvāṇa, and because there is no distinction of different kinds in the Dharmadhātu to be realized. Nāgārjuna said: "Because the Dharmadhātu is without distinction, the chief vehicle is without distinction. You taught three vehicles, for the sake of guiding sentient beings." Thus it is said. Some say: "Because the Dharmadhātu is without distinction," this scripture shows that Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas realize the Dharmadhātu, which is unreasonable. If so, then this scripture shows that there is no difference between the three vehicles realizing the Dharmadhātu and not realizing the Dharmadhātu, it should follow. Accepting that (there is no difference between the three vehicles realizing the Dharmadhātu and not realizing the Dharmadhātu), because of that. If you accept, then "the chief vehicle is without distinction," this scripture shows that there is no difference between those three vehicles being the ultimate vehicle and not being the ultimate vehicle, it should follow. Because of accepting that. Therefore, this scripture shows that Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not realize the Dharmadhātu, because realizing the Dharmadhātu is shown only in the chief vehicle. Second,
