That is to say, the first bhumi trains in the three trainings; the second trains in the training of discipline; the third trains in the training of mind; from the fourth to the sixth, one trains in the training of wisdom; and from the seventh to the tenth, one abides in the fruit of the three trainings, as stated in the Ornament. The third is to say that the first bhumi is the basis of the uncontaminated aggregates; the second trains in the aggregate of discipline; the third in the aggregate of samadhi; from the fourth to the sixth in the aggregate of wisdom; from the seventh onwards in the aggregate of liberation; and above that, one trains in the aggregate of seeing the wisdom of liberation, as stated in the Ornament. The fourth is to say that in each of the ten bhumis, one takes birth in turn as the king of Jambudvipa, the wheel-turning king, Indra, the Avrana, the Tushita, the Nirmanarati, the Paranirmitavasavartin, the Brahma, the lord of a thousand, the Great Brahma, the lord of three thousand, and the Great Isvara, the son of the Akanistha gods, as stated in the Precious Garland. The fifth is to say that in the state of equipoise of the ten bhumis, there is no difference in the way of seeing the nature of self-nature purity, because the dharmadhatu has no parts, so there is no division of seeing and not seeing. There is a difference in the way of seeing the nature of adventitious freedom from defilements, because in the later bhumis, there is a newly obtained liberation from the defilements of the previous bhumis. The meaning of this is that when one realizes the dharmadhatu, one realizes the nature of one's own mind, so the dharmadhatu of the mind that is realized by the wisdom of the second bhumi is not separated from the defilements to be abandoned by seeing, while the dharmadhatu of the mind that is realized by the uninterrupted path of the path of seeing is separated from the defilements to be abandoned by seeing, and so on. The difference in the way of grasping is also not different in the way of seeing the nature of adventitious freedom from defilements. We must remember these kinds of key points. Then, wouldn't the equipoise of the ten bhumis become undifferentiated? There is a very great difference, because of whether or not the accumulation of merit is complete, and because of the power of habituation, there is a difference in being able to eliminate and not being able to eliminate obscurations, and a difference in the way of guiding certainty in the subsequent attainment, and so on.

The first will be explained below. The difference in guiding to certainty is, as it says in the Madhyāntavibhāga: "The meaning of the supreme benefit of universal going, the supreme nature of the meaning of the common cause, the meaning of non-apprehension, the meaning of non-difference of the continuums, the meaning of pure non-affliction, the very meaning of non-difference, the meaning of stainless increase, and power is the place of four aspects." Thus, in the post-attainment state of the first ground, there is a difference in guiding to certainty in the meaning of the Dharma realm's universal going, etc. Sixth, of the two differences of abandoning the afflictive obscuration and abandoning the cognitive obscuration, the first is that on the first ground, one abandons the one hundred and twelve afflictions that are to be abandoned by the path of seeing, and from the second to the tenth ground, one abandons the sixteen afflictions that are to be abandoned by the path of meditation in nine stages. How do the afflictions that are to be abandoned by the path of seeing become one hundred and twelve? Desire, anger, pride, ignorance, doubt, and in terms of views: view of the transitory collection, view of extremes, holding views as supreme, holding ethics and vows as supreme, and wrong view. These ten afflictions, with the distinction of the four truths, have forty in the desire realm. In the form and formless realms, anger is removed by four each, so there are thirty-six each. Thus, there are one hundred and twelve. How do the afflictions that are to be abandoned by the path of meditation become sixteen? Doubt and the latter three views, four are only to be abandoned by the path of seeing, so there are none to be abandoned by the path of meditation. The other six afflictions all have six to be abandoned by the path of meditation in the desire realm. In the form and formless realms, anger is removed by two each, so there are five each. Thus, there are sixteen to be abandoned by the path of meditation. This is the way it is explained in the higher Abhidharma. In the Abhidharmakośa, it says: eighty-eight to be abandoned by the path of seeing, and ten to be abandoned by the path of meditation, so it is said to be ninety-eight. The way in which these afflictions are gradually abandoned on the ten grounds is that the manifest ones are completely abandoned on the first ground. For the latent ones, the latent afflictions to be abandoned by the path of seeing are abandoned all at once by the uninterrupted path of the path of seeing. The latent afflictions to be abandoned by the path of meditation are summarized into three: great, medium, and small, which are included in the desire realm, between the second, third, and fourth grounds.
