Therefore. Phya pa said that the listener needs to be someone who can distinguish between definitive and non-definitive meanings, because for the listener, if they consider a sutra to be a non-definitive sutra, it is because they have not understood the true meaning of the sutra and regard it as literal. If the listener considers a sutra to be a definitive sutra, it is because they have not understood the profound meaning of the sutra and will not regard it as literal. Therefore, for someone who offends Shakyamuni Buddha, if they consider the sutra "I am Vipashyin Buddha" to not be a non-definitive sutra for you, it is because it is a definitive sutra for you, because it is to explain equality. It is not possible to accept the root, because it is a non-definitive sutra for you to counteract (offending the Buddha). Some say that the difference between the two is that the sutra that mainly explains the meaning is the definitive sutra, and the sutra that mainly explains the necessity is the non-definitive sutra. So, if the meaning is mainly explained, does it mean that the necessity is not mainly explained? If according to the first statement, then the definitive and non-definitive sutras contradict each other. What is the reason for the difference between the two? Because the previous statement was admitted. If according to the second statement, then it is not necessary to say "mainly". My own view is that according to the meaning, it is a definitive sutra, and according to the necessity, it is a non-definitive sutra. But the two are not contradictory, because the sutra "I am Vipashyin Buddha", in terms of meaning, is to explain equality, so it is a definitive sutra, and in terms of necessity, it is to counteract offending the Buddha, so it is a non-definitive sutra. Fourth, regarding the three of refutation, establishment, and abandonment. First, some people think that the definitions of definitive and non-definitive sutras are respectively: a sutra that can be accepted literally for what it expresses, and a sutra that cannot be accepted in this way. Some people think that a definitive sutra is a sutra that, after being accepted, will not be harmed by scriptural and logical proofs, and a non-definitive sutra is a sutra that, after being accepted, will be harmed by scriptural and logical proofs. Some people think that the sutras that mainly explain the ultimate truth and the conventional truth are the definitions of the two respectively. In the first statement, formless

Regarding the Prajnaparamita Sutra that says "soundless," it should be considered a definitive meaning (neyartha) sutra because it is a sutra of definitive meaning. If you accept that, then it should follow that it is formless. Regarding the sutra that shows form, it should be considered an interpretive meaning (drangdon) sutra because it is a sutra of interpretive meaning. As it says in the Twentieth Chapter: "For those beings who are to be tamed by it, it is spoken according to their intention, like sentient beings born miraculously." Secondly, regarding the sutra that shows the ultimate three vehicles, it should be a definitive meaning sutra because it has that characteristic. If it is not established, then the assertion that it is a definitive meaning sutra, for you, there should be no harm from scripture or reasoning because you are established by it, because the Vaibhashika school is you. Regarding the sutra that shows all phenomena as lacking inherent existence, it should be an interpretive meaning sutra because it has that characteristic. The method of establishing the sign is known from the previous one. Thirdly, if it is the word of the Buddha, then it must be a definitive meaning sutra because if it is so, then it must have that characteristic. If it is not established, then it should be so. In the Secret Inconceivable Samadhiraja Sutra, it says: "In a thousand world realms, whatever sutras I have spoken, the letters are different but the meaning is the same, it is not possible to fully proclaim." Secondly, the characteristics of these two are, respectively: the sutra that directly shows ultimate truth as the main topic, and the sutra that directly shows the conventional establishment that has become the means of not realizing ultimate truth as the main topic. As it says in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "Emptiness is taught by the Sugata, know the distinction of the definitive meaning sutras. Whatever shows sentient beings, individuals, and persons, know that all those teachings are of interpretive meaning." Therefore, in the views of all four philosophical schools, their respective ultimate truths are similarly considered definitive meaning, and conventional truths are considered interpretive meaning. Since the objects of these two are different, the objects of the two sutras are also different. For example, the sutra that shows atoms as truly existent is considered an interpretive meaning sutra by the first two schools, and a definitive meaning sutra by the latter two schools. Thirdly, some say that both conventional truth and ultimate truth are directly shown.
