Regarding the order of elaborating on conceptualization, although it was previously said by Yongdzin (Dharma name), in the context of brief instruction, the four—object of focus, aspect, cause, and Yongdzin—are described as characteristics with the word "byi" (以, meaning "with" or "by means of") as a connecting particle. And the statement "the four conceptualizations are interdependent" is made within the category of the basis of characteristics, meaning that because the characteristics are determined by the previous four, conceptualization is not a characteristic. So, why explain conceptualization? If it is thought that by showing the four characteristics, it is more excellent than the path of accumulation of the Lesser Vehicle, and it would become no different from the path of seeing and the path of meditation (of the Great Vehicle), (in fact) there is a difference, because the four conceptualizations mentioned here cannot actually be abandoned, and they themselves are the nature of conceptualization. This is the meaning expressed by "interdependent." This does not agree with the bearded ones of India or the red-faced ones of Tibet, but it agrees with the old deity sitting on the throne of Ganden (Monastery), so it is considered best. Third, determining the nature includes: what object is the object of conceptualization, what essence is the entity of conceptualization, how is the manner of conceptualization, what is the definition of such conceptualization, and incidentally explaining terminology, these five aspects. First, there are the two, the grasped-at and the grasper. Regarding the difference between these two, Lo Chen (Great Translator) says that from the perspective of the aggregates, external aggregates such as form are the grasped-at, and internal aggregates such as the eye are considered the grasper. From the perspective of object and subject, matter is the grasped-at, and consciousness is considered the grasper. From the perspective of self and what belongs to self, the object of what belongs to self is the grasped-at, and the self is considered the grasper. However, the two, the grasped-at and the grasper, mentioned here are not from the first perspective, because consciousness is also said to be the grasped-at. Nor is it from the second perspective, because ignorance is also said to be the grasped-at. Nor is it from the third perspective, because the three paths of seeing, meditation, and no-more-learning are also said to be the grasper. The self-system is that the grasped-at and the grasper here are not established from the perspective of the object itself, but from the perspective of how the mind of the subject grasps it. The same phenomenon, when grasped by the mind of the subject as an object to be enjoyed, is the grasped-at, and when grasped as the enjoyer, it becomes the grasper, such as the three paths of seeing, meditation, and no-more-learning.

Because it is said that what is grasped is grasped in the case of the grasped concept, and what is grasping is grasped in the case of the grasping concept. If you know this key point, from the ṭīkā (Sanskrit: ṭīkā, commentary) it says: The grasped that is taught here has two aspects, the aspect of affliction and the aspect of purification. Grasping has two aspects, dharma and person. Dharma is mind and mental factors. A person is when Maitreya (Maitreya Bodhisattva) grasps the aggregates as a whole self, therefore a person is substantially existent; when the noble ones grasp it as merely imputed, therefore a person is nominally existent. The meaning of what is said will also be understood. Otherwise, even if you search hundreds of times for the difference between the grasped and the grasping here, it will only be in vain. Second, there are grasped concepts and grasping concepts, which are the cognitive obscurations that manifest attachment to the side of what is to be enjoyed, and the cognitive obscurations that manifest attachment to the side of the enjoyer. The first has two: manifesting attachment to the side of what should be taken and manifesting attachment to the side of what should be abandoned. The latter has two: holding to be true and not holding to be true. Third, merely focusing on the grasped does not become a grasped concept, because it only becomes that when one focuses on it and manifests attachment to what is to be enjoyed. Merely focusing on the grasping does not become a grasping concept, because it only becomes that when one focuses on it and manifests attachment to the enjoyer. If it is a grasped concept, then it is not pervasive because it has a way of grasping that thinks "this is the grasped," because for the mind that manifests attachment to the pot as knowable, there is no way of grasping that thinks "this pot is the grasped." If it is a grasping concept, then it is not pervasive because it has a way of grasping that thinks "this is the grasping," because for the mind that manifests attachment to the person as the enjoyer, there is no way of grasping that thinks "this person is the enjoyer." Therefore, our own system is that when the object of conception is divided into object and subject, the way of grasping that grasps the side of the object is the way of conceiving of the grasped concept, that is, thinking that one's own object is the grasped, and grasping it as what is to be enjoyed, the object, and the knowable, and so on. When the object of conception is divided into object and subject, the way of grasping that grasps the side of the subject is the way of conceiving of the grasping concept, that is, thinking that one's own object is the grasping, and grasping it as the enjoyer, the subject, and the knower, and so on.
