Its meaning is to protect from fear, and upon obtaining it, one will be liberated from their respective fears. Secondly, doesn't each individual take refuge in all three Jewels? Why are they established separately? This is because, with regard to the Buddha, the Buddha Jewel is established as a refuge due to the inclination to engage in activities, because the Buddha is the supreme among bipeds. With regard to the Dharma, the Dharma Jewel is established as a refuge due to the inclination to engage in activities, because the Dharma is the supreme among those free from desire. With regard to the Sangha, it is established as a refuge due to the inclination to engage in activities, because the Sangha is established as the supreme among assemblies. This is called the refuge of cause because one takes refuge in the Three Jewels that have already been accomplished in the mindstream of others in order to protect oneself from fear. This is not necessarily only for the sake of seeking higher realms, because there are also those who do so for the sake of seeking definite goodness. Thirdly, establishing the ultimate single refuge, the Ratnagotravibhāga states: "Because of abandoning, because of the nature of deception, because of absence, and because of being accompanied by fear, the two kinds of Dharma and the assembly of noble ones are not a constant and supreme refuge. In the ultimate truth, the refuge is only the Buddha, because the Muni possesses the Dharmakaya, and the Sangha is also the ultimate of that." The meaning of what is said is: "Because of abandoning" refers to the twelve branches of scripture, the Dharma of scripture, which appear as names, words, and letters in the mindstream of those to be tamed, and is not the ultimate refuge, because it is only a method for obtaining ultimate realization, and after obtaining it, it should be abandoned like a boat that has crossed the river. Regarding the meaning of "because of the nature of deception," some say that it refers to the path of learning, the truth of Dharma. That is not so, because although it appears to be free from all defilements in one's own perception, in reality it is not free from all defilements, because the aggregation of appearance and emptiness there is a false, deceptive nature. So, does its meaning refer to the appearance in the equipoise of learning, or does it refer to the appearance in the subsequent attainment? If according to the first, then, that is Dharma, it is not, because conventional truth is not appearance, the reason is accepted. If according to the second, then, the subsequent attainment of learning

The object to be proven, it should not appear as such, because it is the path of striving to abandon defilements through knowing oneself to be with defilements. Furthermore, in the view of the Buddha, is the extremely hidden extremely hidden or not? If it is the former, then it should not be extremely hidden, because in his view, it does not exist as extremely hidden. If it is the latter, then the wisdom of the Buddha, the object to be proven, should not be the ultimate refuge, because in one's own view, the extremely hidden does not appear as extremely hidden, but in reality it is extremely hidden, therefore the aggregation of appearance and emptiness there is a false, deceptive dharma. The sign and pervasion are accepted. Furthermore, explaining the meaning of "deceptive dharma" in this way contradicts the explanation of Asanga, because in the explanation it says: "For this, the path belongs to the nature of conditioned phenomena, and whatever belongs to the nature of conditioned phenomena is a false, deceptive dharma; whatever is a false, deceptive dharma is untrue; whatever is untrue is impermanent; whatever is impermanent is not a refuge." In the Tika it says: The truth of the path of learning, the object to be proven, is not the truth, because it is a conditioned, deceptive dharma. As it says in the Root Wisdom: "All conditioned phenomena are deceptive, therefore they are false." To this, some people refute by saying: The two form bodies and the wisdom dharmakaya, the object to be proven, should be the ultimate refuge. Regarding this statement, in one's own system, the truth of the path of learning, the object to be proven, is not the truth, because it does not exist at the ultimate time, therefore it is deceptive at the ultimate time. If it cannot be established, then it does not exist at that time, because it is impermanent and does not remain in the second moment of its own establishment. Then, the first moment of omniscience should also not be the ultimate refuge, because it does not exist at the time of the second moment of omniscience, therefore it is deceptive at the ultimate time. If it cannot be established, then infer as before. Therefore, one's own system is: The truth of the path of learning, the object to be proven, is not the truth, because it has not obtained the qualities that are inseparable from the cessation truth of the two purities, therefore it is a conditioned, deceptive dharma. Furthermore, in the Uttaratantra, the four characteristics of birth, aging, sickness, and death, which are said to represent conditioned phenomena, also have two types: those that exist in the continuum of ordinary beings and those that exist in the continuum of noble beings.
