In order to cling to the continuum of the aggregates with the co-emergent ego-grasping. Regarding this, the commentary on the Abhidharmakosha states, "This expression 'manifesting as self' only applies to the continuum of the aggregates, and not to other things that can be expressed." That self is not substantially existent like the sense-sphere of form, but is considered to be merely imputed, like calling eight particles of matter 'milk.' Regarding this, the commentary on the Abhidharmakosha states, "If it is said to be imputed, then we also say the same." If the self is not substantially existent, then sentient beings would not arise. If you think this, there is no fault, because the aggregates are imputed as sentient beings, and then the continuum of the aggregates arises from the previous moment to the next, which is called the arising of sentient beings. Therefore, if the previous self were substantially existent, that would be the self of a person, and the wisdom that clings to it would be the ego-grasping of a person, so the self of a person does not even exist in name. Third, with the aggregate of consciousness as the object, the co-emergent ego-grasping clings to the idea of 'I,' as it is said in the sutra, "I am my own protector, who else could be my protector? By taming oneself well, the wise will attain high status." Therefore, taming the mind is called taming the self. Therefore, that self which becomes the object of the co-emergent ego-grasping is considered to be permanent, single, and independent due to doctrinal perversion or beginningless habit. Because one sees that the ripening of the karma done by the self is experienced by the self, one clings to the self as permanent. The self is born alone and dies alone, so one clings to the self as single. Because it relies on the clinging called 'I,' it does not rely on others, so one clings to the self as independent. The way in which the self of a person is non-existent is that the object clung to by the co-emergent ego-grasping does not exist ultimately, but it does exist nominally. And the object clung to by imputation, the permanent, single, and independent self, does not even exist nominally. Second, in the treatises of the Mind-Only school, in order to prove that appearances are mind, there are two ways: proving through the characteristic of clarity and awareness, and proving through the characteristic of simultaneous determination. The Jewel Treasury of Reasoning states, "Clarity and

It is accomplished by intention. As it is said. First, the appearing forms and so on are the nature of the mind, because they are clear. Second, in the Pramāṇavārttika it says, "Because of the certainty of simultaneous perception, blue and its cognition are not different." That is, blue and the valid cognition that apprehends it are not different entities, because they are necessarily perceived simultaneously. For example, the appearance of two moons in a mistaken sense consciousness. There are three aspects to this: the subject, the property to be proven, and the reason. First, the five objects of form, etc., and the five valid cognitions that apprehend them. Second, it refutes that the two are different entities, and establishes that the appearing forms, etc., and the mind are the same entity. Third, "simultaneous" means at the same time, "perception" means understanding, and "certainty" means pervasiveness. Third, the apprehended external object, the apprehension that grasps the apprehended external object, is not true, because the apprehended external object does not exist. Just as there is no executioner to kill if there is no son of a barren woman to be killed. Fourth, there are five types of Svātantrika reason for establishing that all phenomena are without inherent existence: examining the essence as neither one nor different; examining the cause with vajra splinters; examining the result with existence, non-existence, arising, and ceasing; examining both with the four extremes of arising and ceasing; and examining everything with the reason of dependent origination. The three intermediate reasons only refute the elaboration of arising, but do not refute truth in general, so they are not the complete body of Madhyamaka. The first and last reasons refute truth in general, so they are the complete logic for establishing the absence of inherent existence. However, the first four reasons refute the imputation of existence, but do not refute the denial of non-existence, while the reason of dependent origination refutes both imputation and denial, so it has more power than the other reasons. Considering this, the Madhyamakāvatāra says, "Therefore, this reasoning of dependent origination cuts through all nets of wrong views." As it is said. So, how do these two refute? It is without inherent existence, because it is dependent origination. It exists conventionally, because it is dependent origination. In this way. Among them, first, one
