Third, regarding marginal examination, there are three aspects: the explanation from the scriptures, refuting the explanations of others, and elucidating the view that accords with reality. The first is: In the root text, it says, "The distinction of ordinary beings is that they consider sentient beings to be truly existent and hold onto conceptual thoughts, which are considered pure. The distinction of noble beings is that they consider sentient beings to be nominally existent and hold onto conceptual thoughts, which are considered pure." Thus, the two types of conceptual thoughts are definitively shown to be distinct for ordinary beings and noble beings. In the commentary "Light on Twenty Thousand Verses," it says, "All phenomena are selfless." Can't ordinary beings also realize such phenomena? If so, wouldn't the establishment of grasping conceptual thoughts in the first way be non-pervasive? If asked in this way, the answer is: Those are aspirational mental engagements, while here we intend to speak of actual mental engagements, so it is meaningless. Moreover, noble beings also have such instances, as the sutra says, "Monks, after the night has passed and it is morning, they hear the sound of jackals howling." Similarly, "At that time, I will become the king of beasts, the lion without crippled limbs." Isn't that what was said? If so, wouldn't the establishment of grasping conceptual thoughts in the second way be non-pervasive? If asked in this way, the answer is: Those words are conventional truths, not ultimate truths, so it is meaningless. Similarly, it is also explained in the Great Commentary. The second is: Arna says that what this scripture actually shows is that the conceptual thoughts of grasping at true existence and the conceptual thoughts of grasping at imputation are mainly for ordinary beings and noble beings, and only shows clear examples, not definitive distinctions. Others say that this scripture definitively shows the conceptual thoughts of grasping at true existence and the conceptual thoughts of grasping at imputation, which are to be abandoned by seeing, as distinct for ordinary beings and noble beings, but generally speaking, it does not definitively show these two as distinct. Some who rely solely on the literal meaning say that this scripture explains that the ego-grasping of a person who grasps at a self-sufficient and independent truly existent person as the object of grasping at true existence, and the mind that grasps at a person as merely imputed, guided by the wisdom that directly realizes selflessness, as the object of grasping at imputation. Therefore, it definitively explains it for ordinary beings and noble beings, but it does not definitively explain the conceptual thoughts of grasping at true existence and the conceptual thoughts of grasping at imputation as distinct for ordinary beings and noble beings, because noble beings also have conceptual thoughts of grasping at true existence, and ordinary beings also have conceptual thoughts of grasping at imputation.

The answer is, reject. The first view is unreasonable, because if the real grasping conceptualization actually indicated here is unique to ordinary beings, then there will be the fault of not being pervasive; if it is the imputed grasping conceptualization, then there will be the fault of being unique to the noble ones, not being pervasive. Because of that proposition. If you admit it, then the answer that "from the sunlight, establishing that the first type of grasping conceptualization is not pervasive" and "establishing that the second type is not pervasive" etc. is meaningless, which is unreasonable. The second view is unreasonable, because even Hinayana noble ones have real grasping conceptualizations that are to be abandoned by seeing, and Bodhisattva ordinary beings have imputed grasping conceptualizations that are to be abandoned by seeing. The first reason, because their continuum has real grasping conceptualizations that are to be abandoned by seeing with respect to phenomena, that is, their continuum has real grasping that grasps phenomena as true that are to be abandoned by seeing. The latter reason, because their continuum has imputed grasping conceptualizations of faith and attention to phenomena that are to be abandoned by seeing. The third view is also unreasonable, if the object of the real grasping conceptualization mentioned here is grasping the self of a person as an independent, substantially existent entity, then it must be the grasping of the self of a person. Because it is reasonable to identify its object in that way. If you admit it, then the nine objects such as grasping and abandoning, the subject, will have that situation. If it is not established, then it is unreasonable that the real grasping conceptualization mentioned here cannot be divided into nine types by the difference of objects. For the latter, if the object of the imputed grasping conceptualization is the mind that grasps a person as merely imputed, led by the wisdom that directly realizes selflessness, then it should be like that. Because it is reasonable to identify its object in that way. If you admit it, then it is the same as before. In addition, from the "Sunlight Treatise": "If you say, then it will not be able to pervade the first type of grasping conceptualization?" Then, the so-called first type of grasping conceptualization is not a subject-possessing real grasping conceptualization, but merely an object-real grasping; the so-called second type of grasping conceptualization that "the second type of grasping conceptualization cannot pervade" is not a subject-possessing imputed grasping conceptualization, but merely an object-imputed grasping. Because the conceptualization specifically determined for beings and noble ones is not a subject-possessing real grasping conceptualization and imputed grasping conceptualization, but an object-real
