Because the future life is acknowledged, all eight consciousnesses are separated from one entity through different perspectives. Secondly, it is divided into: identifying the object of attachment to be eliminated, and the manner of eliminating attachment to it, in two ways. The first is further divided into: generally indicating the object, and specifically explaining the faculties, in two ways. The first is: Here, the object of attachment to be eliminated is, as stated in the sutra: villages, cities, towns, and self, these four. The term 'village' indicates the faculties, because a village is the support for beings, similarly, the faculties are the support for consciousness. The term 'city' indicates the aggregates that are the support for the faculties, because a city is the support for a village, similarly, they are the support for the faculties, resembling a village. The term 'town' indicates the objects of the faculties, because a place of trade is called a town, where people have activities of entering and leaving, similarly, objects are what are entered by consciousness. The term 'self' indicates consciousness, because consciousness is the one who enjoys the objects. Secondly, it is divided into four aspects: classification, meaning of the term, determination of number, and their respective nature. The first is: There are twenty-two faculties. From the perspective of complete defilement, there are six faculties such as the eye, the two gender faculties, the five feeling faculties of suffering, pleasure, joy, displeasure, and equanimity, and the life faculty, totaling fourteen. From the perspective of purification, there are five faculties such as faith, the faculty of 'I shall know what I do not know', the faculty of knowledge, and the faculty of complete knowledge, totaling eight. The second is: Because of the function of particularly dominating, it is called a faculty. So, what dominates what? The five faculties such as the eye dominate their respective objects such as form. The mind dominates the general meaning. The male faculty dominates the male nature, such as a loud voice and high genitals. The female faculty dominates the female nature, such as a low voice and low genitals. The life faculty dominates abiding in the same category. The five feeling faculties dominate complete defilement. The five faculties such as faith dominate purification. The faculty of 'I shall know what I do not know' dominates obtaining the faculty of knowledge. That dominates obtaining the faculty of complete knowledge.

It has power over that. It has power to attain Nirvana. Therefore, it is called an 'Indriya' (faculty). Third, why is it ascertained that there are twenty-two faculties? In terms of entering samsara, it is initially ascertained to be fourteen. The basis for entering there is the six faculties of the eye, etc. What causes birth there is the two faculties of male and female. What causes it to remain after being born is the faculty of life. What causes it to remain and enjoy the nearby place is the five faculties of feeling. In terms of turning away from samsara and entering Nirvana, it is ascertained to be eight pure faculties. Taking the basis for entering there as the faculty, there are the five faculties of faith, etc. What is born there is the faculty of knowing everything that is unknown. What causes it to remain continuously is the faculty of knowing everything. Taking the enjoyment of the bliss of liberation as the faculty, there are the faculties of possessing all knowledge. Fourth, there are two aspects: refutation and establishment. First, some say that the clear subtle particles within that produce the visual consciousness, which is the self-result of the eye, are the characteristic of the eye faculty. If asked whether this applies to the body faculty, etc., if it is the eye faculty, then it must be the eye faculty with a basis, because if it is, then it must be that characteristic. In the case of the mind faculty, some say that, assuming that the alaya-vijnana is not accepted, the mind, the primary consciousness, and the vijnana are all the same meaning, because the Abhidharmakosha says, "Mind, thought, and consciousness are the same meaning." Therefore, if it is mind, then it is pervaded by the mind faculty, and the characteristic of the mind faculty is the entering consciousness, which is said to produce the consciousness that has become its own self-result. Then, it follows that having a basis and being concurrent are the same meaning, because the Abhidharmakosha says, "The basis and the object, along with the aspects, are called concurrent." The pervasion is accepted. If it is asserted, then the eye faculty of form with a basis is the subject, and it follows that it is concurrent, because it has a basis. The pervasion is real. Furthermore, the consciousness of the mind that is the interruption of one's own continuum is the subject, and it follows that it is the outer aspect of the characteristic of the mind faculty, because it is the signified. The sign is accepted, because it is mind, because it is the primary consciousness, because it is vijnana. If it is not established, then it follows that it is there, because it exists like that, because the Abhidharmakosha says, "The unconscious one is without consciousness."
