If it is admitted that a Mahāyāna practitioner on the path of joining is invariably endowed with the distinction of irreversibility, others would state this fault as follows: The scripture "Forms, etc., have signs of regression, etc. (གཟུགས་ལ་སོགས་ལ་ལྡོག་སོགས་རྟགས།)" already states that all three, sharp, medium, and dull faculties, of a Mahāyāna practitioner on the path of joining have attained the sign of irreversibility, it should follow. The sign is admitted. If you accept that, then it becomes unnecessary to separately point out that Mahāyāna practitioners on the paths of seeing and meditation have attained the sign of irreversibility, it should follow. Because of that acceptance. Because of pervasion, if all of the former are definitely irreversible, then the latter two must also be definitely so. Having refuted this, in one's own system, the minimum limit of the sign of irreversibility is placed sequentially on the three paths in accordance with the order of faculties. Then, the scripture "Forms, etc., have signs of regression, etc. (གཟུགས་ལ་སོགས་ལ་ལྡོག་སོགས་རྟགས།)" and so on, already states that all sharp-witted bodhisattvas on the path of joining have attained the sign of irreversibility, it should follow. Because if a bodhisattva on the path of joining is sharp-witted, it is invariably the case that they have attained the sign of irreversibility. The sign and pervasion are admitted. If you admit that, then, let it be for a moment. The scripture already states that all sharp-witted heroes residing in the heat stage have attained the sign of irreversibility, it should follow. Because of that acceptance. If you admit that, then admit it, it becomes unnecessary to separately point out that all sharp-witted bodhisattvas residing in the peak of the path of joining, forbearance, and supreme worldly qualities have attained the sign of irreversibility, it should follow. Because of that acceptance. The pervasion is admitted, if all sharp-witted heroes residing in the heat stage are definitely irreversible, then the sharp-witted individuals residing in the latter three paths of joining must also be definitely so. Some say that the sharp-witted bodhisattva on the path of joining, that is, the medium-witted on the path of seeing, that is, the dull-witted on the path of meditation, there are two, those who have attained the sign of irreversibility and those who have not, and those who have attained it should be established here as the sangha represented by the sign of irreversibility. Then, the sharp-witted bodhisattva on the path of joining whose lineage is not determined has not attained the sign of irreversibility, it should follow. Because there is a sharp-witted bodhisattva on the path of joining who has not attained it. It cannot be admitted, because in the Great Commentary it says, some, although their lineage is not determined, have a decisive aspect and

This contradicts the statement that in situations that suit (sentient beings') faculties, one must definitely attain non-retrogression because one possesses inconceivable differences in methods. Furthermore, it would follow that there is a Bodhisattva who cannot possibly obtain the signs of non-retrogression. Because if a Bodhisattva is on the path of application, it is not pervasive that they obtain the signs of non-retrogression. If you accept this, it would follow that there are noble Buddhas who have never obtained the signs of non-retrogression. Some say that the main subjects to be explained here are the Sangha of the path of application who are non-retrogressing, the Sangha of the path of seeing who are non-retrogressing, and the Sangha of the path of meditation who are non-retrogressing. The definitions of these three are, respectively: a Bodhisattva who has obtained any one of the three signs, divided into four categories, and believes that they have obtained it, and abides in the concordant part of ascertainment; a Bodhisattva who has obtained any one of the sixteen reasons, such as the reversal of the perception of forms, etc., and believes that they have obtained it, and abides in the realization of truth; a Bodhisattva who abides in the subsequent realization, possessing special actions of body and speech in the subsequent attainment, drawn by the eight profound samadhis. If so, then the dull-witted Bodhisattva abiding in heat is the former (i.e., the first definition), because they are the object to be explained, because they are a Bodhisattva on the path of application. The sharp-witted mind abiding in the forbearance of suffering is the second definition, because they are the object to be explained. If you accept this, then it would follow that they are not a person abiding in the first moment of the path of seeing, because that is what is accepted. The Bodhisattva at the peak of existence is the latter definition, because they are the object to be explained. The thesis and the example are established by the subject. Secondly, in general, merely not retrogressing from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment exists even from the path of accumulation. But that does not belong to the Sangha of non-retrogression, because the minimum boundary for becoming that is said to be from the path of application. Because after obtaining the path of application of the Great Vehicle, it is impossible to retrogress from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, because after obtaining it, one does not engage in inferior enlightenment through the two aspects of intention and action. If one is a Sangha of non-retrogression, it is not pervasive that one obtains the signs that establish it, because when one obtains this path and that path, one obtains the signs of this path and that path.
