saying things like, "After becoming like that, my doctrine will flourish greatly." Thus, the teacher who was prophesied by the Victorious One (Buddha) and who attained the first ground, the Joyful One, how did he compose the treatises? Regarding this, the early scholars say that there are three ways: clarifying the cause, the Paramita Vehicle; clarifying the result, the Vajra Vehicle; and showing that the two have the same meaning. The first is further divided into three: mainly showing the view are the Six Collections of Madhyamaka Reasoning; mainly showing the conduct is the extensive Collection of Bodhi; the intermediate is the Compendium of Sutras; the concise is the Letter to a Friend, these three; and showing both view and conduct equally is the Precious Garland of Advice to a King. However, it is also explained that the five collections of Madhyamaka reasoning establish emptiness through reasoning; the collections of praises show it through the door of speech; the Letter to a Friend and the Precious Garland are advice to one's own friend, King Excellent Conduct; it is said that the root, or basis, or body-like thing of all the treatises that proclaimed the lion's roar three times on the earth is this very treatise called "Wisdom," the Root Verses on the Middle Way. There are three aspects to explaining this: the meaning of the translator's sacred head; the meaning of the author's sacred text; and the meaning of the conclusion of the completed translation. The first has two parts: the meaning of the title; and the salutation of the translation. The first has two parts: translating the title and explaining the title. The first is: In general, in India, Prakrita, that is, the language of each region, or nature, or common language, and its derivative Apabhramsa, that is, the corrupt language, are the two languages of India itself. Pisaci is the language of the flesh-eating demons, and Samskrta is the language of the gods because the root and suffix are well combined, so it is "well-made," but it is named after the language of India because it flourished in the holy land of India. Of these four languages, here in the Samskrta language, Prajna (wisdom) is wisdom, Nama (name) is named or name, Mula (root) is root, Madhyamaka (middle way) is the middle way, and Karika (verse) is verse. The second is: Because it explains the middle way that avoids the two extremes, it is the middle way, which is named after the meaning of what is being explained. The Madhyamaka treatises written by the teacher himself, or the later Madhyamaka

Because it is the root of all treatises, it is the root, named from its qualities. Because the text exists in verse form, it is a verse, named from what is expressed. Because it generates the wisdom that realizes selflessness, it is wisdom, named from its function. Secondly, homage to the Three Jewels. Homage to youthful Manjushri. Homage to the noble teacher Nagarjuna. The "homage" that appears therein indicates that this treatise is called "The Manifestation of Reality." Because it mainly expounds the training of superior wisdom, it is the homage prescribed by the Lotsawa Panditas, while the former and latter two are homages to the deity one favors, so either is acceptable. Secondly, the meaning of the author's excellent treatise has three aspects: expressing reverence through the means of showing the view; establishing the view to be taught itself; and paying homage through the means of remembering kindness. The first has two aspects: expressing directly, explaining the meaning of reverence; implying indirectly, explaining the meaning of necessary connection. The first has three aspects: the meaning of necessity, the meaning of summary, and the meaning of words. The first has three aspects: generally making offerings to a special object, making offerings for the sake of composing a treatise, and the necessity of writing the text down. The first is that generally making offerings to the teacher completes the two accumulations and fully possesses the cause of enlightenment. The second is that external and internal obstacles are pacified, thereby completely finishing the work. The third is that it becomes a model for the conduct of virtuous people. Here, because one practices virtuous conduct oneself, one knows that the author himself is a virtuous person, therefore others will enter the treatise he has written; before writing, because one expresses reverence to the deity one believes in, one knows that this treatise has abundant necessity, therefore others will enter; those who hear and explain the treatise, because they hear and explain the reverence, it will be completely accomplished; for others as well, they will learn to express reverence to the Three Jewels before special actions, and then begin to act; merely seeing the reverence, and reciting and so on, through the means of obtaining merit, to take hold of other disciples, there are three. Just like that
