pa'o. Eye, mind, and ear are, when saying "eye, mind, and ear," regarding how the senses grasp objects, how the measure and arrangement of the senses abide, and among the three ways of grasping by contact or non-contact, and grasping jointly or non-jointly, the first is: The eye abides within the eyeball, like a black mustard flower and a safflower. The fine particles of the sense are covered with a clear color like skin, so they do not separate, or they abide like mustard seeds above and below the sense base, clear like crystal so they do not obscure each other. Thus it is said. The ear is inside the ear, like a plucked barley boil, with a color similar to barley, and it abides within that. The nose is in the nostril, abiding like two copper needles placed side by side. These three abide in a circular manner like a rosary, without confusion. The tongue is in the center of the tip of the tongue, about the size of a hair tip, not pervaded by the sense, so it abides like a crescent moon in the two places opposite each other. From the earth's elements, that is the path through which brain fluid drips, so if that is missing, appetite will be lost and the body and mind will be uneasy, it is said. The body abides like the scales of armor or skin that is soft to the touch, it is said, but internally it is not pervaded by the sense, so it abides according to the arrangement of the sense base. The Sautrāntika school of reasoning asserts that such differences in color and shape are not established, so they believe that the consciousness of the senses abiding within those sense bases is a power that can independently generate. The second is: Do the six senses grasp objects by contact or non-contact? The eye grasps without contacting the object, because it sees forms from a great distance, and because it does not see eye medicine without intervening sky, cataracts, and skin. The ear also grasps without contacting the object, because it hears sounds from a great distance, and if that sound were to come here, it would become continuous with the sound. So, without contact, will it also grasp what is obstructed and very distant due to similarity? That is not pervasive, just as a magnet attracts iron but does not attract obstructed and very distant iron. The mind also grasps without contact, because it is not corporeal, so it would become impossible to contact. The nose, tongue, and body grasp after contact, because without screen

Because the nose cannot smell without contact, and the tongue and body cannot perceive taste and touch without contact. Regarding the meaning of "contact," everyone considers it to be a complete combination. However, the Kashmiri scholars say that there is actually no contact between atoms. If the entire self were to make contact, coarse matter could not be formed; if only part of it were to make contact, the atom would have parts. Therefore, for indivisible atoms, being surrounded by atoms from six directions, even with intervals, but with no other atoms in between, is considered "contact." The Venerable Vasumitra says that if atoms were to make contact, because they arise in the first moment and make contact in the second, they would become permanent, so there is no contact. Then, how do drums and drumsticks produce sound? Because there is no contact, sound is produced. If there were contact, like striking clay with clay, it would sink, so no sound would be produced. Then, wouldn't the atoms of an assembled mass separate because they exist independently? They would not separate, because they are held by the wind. Then, would they be scattered by the wind? No, like a destroying wind, some winds destroy, while like a forming wind, some winds participate in holding, because the latter holds. The teacher, the Venerable, says that there is no adhesion or contact between atoms, but like a yak tail and a ne'u sing, because there is no interval, it is merely perceived as contact, which is just an illusion. The teacher agrees with this view, that if there were intervals between atoms, then no one could prevent other atoms from entering that space. The third question is: Then, do the sense faculties grasp similar or dissimilar objects? The nose, tongue, and body, these three sense faculties must make contact with themselves in order to grasp objects, so they can only grasp similar objects. The eyes can grasp small objects, such as the tip of a hair; large objects, such as mountains; and similar objects, such as the size of a grape, etc. The ears can also grasp small sounds, such as the sound of a bee; large sounds, such as thunder; and similar sounds, such as the sound of rubbing inside the ear. Consciousness is not a physical entity, so there is completely no obstruction. "There are no lower eyes on the body." The meaning of this phrase is: Upon what does the body rely, and when the eyes view objects, are the body, eyes, objects, and consciousness in the same place, or are they not in the same place?
