Just as with the harvest of crops, if an individual's continuum possesses any seed capable of generating the Pratimoksha vows, it should be sown in the field of leisure and endowment, which is like fertile land and lacks obstructing factors. Possess the five conducive conditions, like water and fertilizer. If the continuum is not tainted by transgressions, which are like hail, then vows, like the harvest of crops, will arise. So, is it sufficient to merely obtain the vows? It is not sufficient. If one does not protect them after obtaining them, there will be faults similar to wielding a sword and striking one's own body in this world, therefore it is very important to protect them after obtaining them. There are five aspects to this. First, the external condition is that one must rely on others to protect them. Because a beginner is very much in need of protecting the vows, and other methods of protection also arise from relying on it, it is taught first. The reason for being very much in need is that a person who has just taken full ordination is like a newborn baby in the world. If that newborn baby is not cared for by a mother skilled in methods, either they will grow up with a life-threatening danger, or they will become crippled or lame when they are young, and no perfection will arise. Other than that, if a mother skilled in methods nurtures them by possessing conducive conditions and avoiding adverse conditions, it is said that over time they will become very perfect. There will be no hindrance no matter where they are sent, and someone even better than their own parents will appear. Similarly, if a person who has just taken full ordination is not cared for by a virtuous friend, either they will be tainted in their continuum with a root downfall along with a concealing mind, which is like a life-threatening danger, or they will be oppressed by lesser demons, like being crippled or lame, and no perfection will arise. To this, if they are cared for by another virtuous friend, telling them, 'These are what you should abandon, so abandon them; these are what you should practice, so practice them,' after giving instructions and guidance, and that person follows their instructions, through preventing and allowing, thereby purifying the discipline completely. Based on this, over time, they become skilled in the three pitakas that are expressed, familiar with the three trainings that are expressed, and an excellent person of wisdom and virtue, like the string of a bow.

Completely severing, becoming a model for others to emulate. The teacher himself will also have the thought, "Do I possess both erudition and rigor?" Other methods of guarding also arise from this, as the scripture says: "Accompanied by the guru, relying on the instructions of the Khenpo, with a sense of fear, the fortunate ones practice with reverence, and mindfulness will arise happily." Thus it is said. In this way, relying on the external condition of a virtuous friend, one must protect one's mind with perfect intention, because if there is no internal proximate cause, the external conditions will not produce a perfect result. Having qualities such as lineage, merit, and appearance, feeling ashamed to engage in misdeeds, and thinking that if I commit such misdeeds, I will be ridiculed by teachers and fellow practitioners, and therefore not doing it, one needs to have this special sense of shame. Because shame and embarrassment are the main factors in abandoning evil deeds. Whether what is learned is the Dharma itself or common characteristics, it is important to not forget. The root scripture says: "For all actions that become the gateway to downfall, one should accomplish them with mindfulness." Thus it is said. For any action of body and speech, one should separately consider whether this action is feasible or not, and when starting to act, immediately consider whether this action is appropriate. The root scripture says: "One should act with awareness." Thus it is said. When strong and lasting afflictions that should be abandoned arise, one must rely on strong and lasting diligence. The Pratimoksha Sutra says: "O venerable ones, you should practice yoga with diligence." Thus it is said. In this way, those who possess the internal proximate cause must protect themselves by recognizing the unfavorable aspects that should be abandoned. Even if one relies on the external condition of a virtuous friend, and the internal proximate cause possesses perfect intention, if one does not recognize the unfavorable aspects that should be abandoned, it is like guarding against an enemy in the world without recognizing the enemy, or a patient taking medicine without recognizing the disease, and one will not be aware that what should be abandoned has contaminated one's mind. Therefore, one must recognize the unfavorable aspects, which are divided into unfavorable aspects that contradict the general discipline, and the individual discipline.
