“Knowing taste from form,” etc., and “Thus knowing all past times,” etc. In the commentary on the Root Text of Reasoning, it says: From the sign of speech, inferring the meaning one intends to express; from smoke, inferring the change of sandalwood; from a particular smoke, proving that there is fire now; at night, inferring smoke from the forest fire; inferring shape from taste, etc. These are the signs of the result of inferring the cause. The third is: “Prior wisdom is not necessarily produced immediately by effort,” etc., which is shown by these words. Here, some say: The sense consciousness of hearing the sound of a conch shell, the impermanent sound of its own cause has already arisen, because it is an unerring auditory consciousness produced by effort. Others say: The blue-appearing sense consciousness in the continuum of Devadatta, its own cause, that impermanent blue, must have already arisen, because it is an unerring visual consciousness that appears blue. If you accept this, then if you exist, the impermanent blue must exist. The self-view is: This bluish smoke in the sky, this is the subject, fire has already preceded it, because it is smoke. The fourth is: “Although other causes exist, because sense consciousnesses do not exist, different causes become inferential,” which is shown by these words. The blue-grasping sense-manifest consciousness, this is the subject, has its own objective condition other than sense-mind, because if that does not exist, it does not arise, and it is a homogeneous basis that sometimes arises. To this, others say: The sense organ that has form is the manifest consciousness that takes the object, it should be so. Because of this reason. It cannot be accepted, because if it is your objective condition, then it must be either sense or mind. Saying this seems to be a failure to remember the promise, that is the subject, if there is no objective condition other than sense-mind, it does not arise, and it should not be a homogeneous basis that sometimes arises, because even if there is no objective condition other than sense-mind, it arises. The sign is accepted. The subject itself is also unreasonable, because if it is the object to be grasped, then it must be an external source. The fifth is: “Because it is sometimes, this suffering is established as having a cause,” which is shown by these words. The truth of suffering, this is the subject, has a cause, because it sometimes arises. Included in the similar category.

For example, judging the presence of water from water birds (chuchyar), predicting rain from the croaking of frogs and the moving of ant nests, and determining the stability of the foundation from the stillness of water and the presence of junipers, these are all included in the category of effect-signs because they are meant to assist with other meanings. Third, regarding the classification, there are three ways to determine, and two necessities for the exposition. The first is: most of the subject-property (phyogs chos) of effect-signs is established through direct perception, such as, through the direct perception of seeing smoke on a smoky mountain, thereby deriving the definite understanding that the smoky mountain has smoke. It can also be established through inference, such as, using the sign of being purified by three examinations to prove that the 'Eight Thousand Verses' (bka' brgyad stong pa) establishes the preceding-preceding subject-property through the measure of understanding its own doctrine, which is established through inference. The pervasive relation is established by relying on the determination of the causal relationship. The second is: in order to counteract the wrong view of the Tirthikas who believe that things arise from causes of different kinds, the effect-sign that establishes the real cause is taught, because it shows that smoke arises from fire and does not arise from the head of Indra (brgya byin) who has no fire. In order to counteract the wrong view of the Ishvaravadins who believe that all container and content worlds are created by Ishvara, the inferential effect-sign that establishes the cause-property is taught, because it shows that all things arise from their own substantial cause and co-emergent conditions, and not from anything else. In order to counteract the wrong view of the Lokayatas who believe that the consciousness of a newborn does not have a prior consciousness, and the Samkhyas who believe that yogic direct perception has not yet arisen, and the Vaibhashikas who believe that cause and effect exist simultaneously, the reason of the effect that establishes the cause preceding the effect is taught, because it shows that the consciousness of a newborn has a prior consciousness, and that the 'Eight Thousand Verses' has the yogic direct perception of understanding its own doctrine preceding it, and that if it is an effect, it must have its own cause preceding it. In order to counteract the wrong view of the Cittamatrins who believe that there is no external object, the correct effect-sign that establishes the difference of the cause is taught, because it shows that sense direct perception is different from sense consciousness.
