Among the two types of reasoning, the independent reasoning and the harmful reasoning, the first is: Whatever does not depend on its own cause and becomes its own nature, it is necessarily its own nature. For example, just as the last moment of the collection of causes produces its own effect without depending on its own cause. Similarly, a pot also disintegrates without depending on its own cause. If it is said that the reason is not established, because the disintegration of a pot depends on a hammer, etc., and the disintegration of a tree depends on fire, then to refute that, (the scripture says) "It has the reason of other dharma meanings." etc., and "Things other than fire." etc. Here, regarding the meaning of saying that disintegration is without cause, for the object to be disintegrated, such as a pot, considering the disintegration of the pot as the Buddhist school, and considering the disintegration of the pot as the Vaisheshika school, where the object of the pot does not exist after the pot is disintegrated, in the first case, it means that there is no cause of disintegration other than the cause of the pot. In the latter case, it means that there is absolutely no cause. The second is harmful reasoning: The Ishvaravadins (theists) say that just as most crows are black, but there may be white ones, most things are impermanent, but some things like Ishvara are permanent, so the reason enters the dissimilar side of things. The Samkhyas (enumerators) say that sound and other changing things, although made by the Pradhana (primordial matter), are permanent, so the reason enters the dissimilar side of what is to be established. To refute the first, whatever is empty of being able to function sequentially and simultaneously is necessarily empty of substance. For example, like space. The permanent things like Ishvara are also empty of being able to function sequentially and simultaneously, so they are empty of substance. This shows that the reason harms the common ground of things and the dissimilar side of permanence. Here, although the permanent Ishvara is listed, if it is listed according to what has already been listed, its meaning has become the subject, so there is no fault of non-establishment. To refute the latter, whatever arises occasionally is necessarily empty of permanence. For example, like the last moment of a lamp flame. Sound also arises occasionally, this is establishing the reason, and it harms the common ground of the dissimilar side of permanence. So, can either of these two establish pervasion?
