How to say it? Aren't livestock also property? That's what it says. Secondly, that dharma, it follows that the horse and its result are related, whatever is asserted, because it is another thing that comes from that (horse). Thirdly, saying that the horse and unrelated other things means admitting that it is unrelated to the horse, and actually admitting that it is related. The self-system is, any dharma that does not abandon other dharmas in the face of a non-inverted other-exclusion mind. Secondly, the Sanskrit word for relation is bandha. Sambandha means completely bound, and pratibandha means separately bound. Therefore, in the face of other-exclusion, two dharmas are bound without being related, so it is a relation. Thirdly, there are two: the actual distinction and the basis on which the relation exists. The first has five: the basis of distinction, the nature of distinction, the reason for distinguishing, the meaning of how to distinguish, and the definite number of distinctions. The first is just relation. The second is the relation of one identity and the relation of its result. The definitions are in order: any dharma that does not abandon other dharmas by the power of one nature in the face of exclusion, and any dharma that does not abandon other dharmas by the power of being produced from it in the face of exclusion. The third is by the power of having both one nature and being produced from it. Fourth, in relation to each basis, the nature is one, for example, smoke is related to its own generality as one identity, and in relation to its own cause, it is related as its result. In relation to one basis, the nature is different, because if a dharma is related to it as one identity, then it is contradictory to be related to it as its result. Fifth, the relation is definitely two, because all knowable things are contained in two: one identity and different identity. Among them, those that are related to one identity are all related as one identity, and those that are related to different identities are all contained as its result relation. Secondly, some say that because non-existent things do not establish their own nature, relations cannot be established, and relations are established on existent things. This is not reasonable, because ultimate relations cannot be established on either, and relations made by the mind can also be established on non-existent things. As it says in the Examination of Relations: Relations made by the mind, who can prevent them even for non-existent things? That's what it says.

For this reason. Some argue that relations can be established on objects but not on categories, but this has been refuted by the previous reasoning. Some argue that a relation of 'arising from that' cannot be established on an instant, because it has no aiding function. As the sutra says, 'All conditioned things are momentary. There is no abiding, so where is there any function?' And here it also says, 'Since it is an instant, from what does it function?' Therefore, this is unreasonable, because an instant has an aiding function, but ordinary minds cannot ascertain it. As it says in the Pramāṇaviniścaya, 'Momentary things are such that aiding is possible.' Third, there are three aspects to explaining the valid cognition that determines relations: establishing the definition, identifying the subject of the definition, and the manner in which they are determined. The first has two aspects: the manner in which it is taught in the texts, and ascertaining its meaning. The first is: In the Pramāṇaviniścaya it says, 'A reason other than one that has a relation of 'not arising if that is absent' is called only an apparent reason.' If a sign is valid, then the relation of 'not arising if that is absent' must be ascertained. If a sign is valid, then the counter-inference must be established, so the teacher considers that the counter-inference is not established merely by not seeing it in the dissimilar class. If it were established, there would be the three faults of contradicting scripture, reasoning, and commitment. If the relation is established, then the counter-inference of all three signs is established. That relation is also determined by the valid cognition that determines cause and effect and the valid cognition that determines nature. The establishment of the first reason is the three verses beginning with 'not seeing in the dissimilar class.' The establishment of the second is the six verses beginning with 'as an antidote to delusion.' The establishment of the third is the eight verses beginning with 'therefore, related to that.' The establishment of the fourth is the three verses beginning with 'the objects of cause and effect.' Now, how is that relation determined for the three signs? The determination of the relation of 'arising from that' for the sign of effect is the five verses beginning with 'the effect of fire is smoke.' The determination of the relation of 'one identity' for the sign of nature is from 'also in nature, there is no arising if that is absent' to 'also for others, it changes by its very nature.' Therefore, those with the sphere of objects, etc.
