The valid cognitions that cause certainty about the meaning of the nature of the ground, and the yogic direct perceptions, etc., have two objects of engagement: self-characterized and non-self-characterized. Second, from the perspective of the mode of engagement, there are six aspects to dividing into self and general: the basis of division, the entity of division, the manner of dividing, the meaning of division, the determination of number, and the individual nature of each. The first is: the object of measurement alone. The second is: the self-characteristic and the general characteristic. The third is: as it says, "Obtaining is preceded by engagement, the basis of engagement is knowledge." Thus, obtaining without deceiving the meaning depends on engaging with the meaning. That, in turn, depends on knowing the meaning. The way of knowing has two aspects: knowing through the appearance of the general aspect and the appearance of the specific aspect, hence the division into two. The fourth is: among the four differences, it is the difference that prevents oneness, like things and non-things. The fifth is: from the perspective of the mode of engagement with the object of measurement, the number of self and general is definite, because from the perspective of the result, there are two types of phenomena: those that can perform a function and those that cannot. From the perspective of essence, there are two types of phenomena: similar, common phenomena and dissimilar, uncommon phenomena. From the perspective of the subject, sound, there are two types: whether or not it is the actual object expressed by sound. From the perspective of the subject, consciousness, there are two types: the actual object of conceptual and non-conceptual consciousness. The pervasiveness and the limbs of establishing the property of the subject of these are clear in the text. The sixth has three aspects: definition, division, and examination of the establishment. The first has three aspects: refutation, establishment, and abandonment. The first is: some assert that the two phenomena, those that can perform a function and those that cannot, are the definition of those two, in terms of ultimate truth. This is not reasonable, because the texts such as "What is the ultimately truthful performer of a function?" show the definition of the two truths according to the Sautrāntika system and the basis of the self and general, but do not show the definition of the self and general. As Yāmarī says: incidentally, it explains the establishment of the two truths of the inferior vehicle. Some say that the object that abides without mixing place, time, and nature is the self-characteristic. This is not the definition of the self-characteristic, because if it were, then the form aggregate in front, which is self-characterized, would be what is expressed.

Therefore, if it is thought so, the selfless dharma becomes the self-characteristic of the form aggregate in front, because it is self-characteristic. Saying this is the same as saying to oneself, the selfless dharma becomes a thing that exists without the mixture of place, time, and nature, because it is self-characteristic. All three are accepted. Some say that the definitions of self-characteristic and general characteristic should be established, but if they are established as "the definition of one's own definition" and "the definition of the general definition," then the faults mentioned earlier will occur. This statement is also childish talk. Because the scriptures say "one's own definition" and "the general definition," it is only that these words are abbreviated into the names of "self-characteristic" and "general characteristic." As the sutra says, "Two definitions can be measured," and here it also says, "These are the definitions of self and general." Therefore, one's own definition and the general definition are not to take self and general as what is to be expressed, and then to express them, but to establish what is to be expressed as self and general. Because the word "definition" has two meanings, the agent and the object, and here it is said that it refers to the object. In the Clear Words on the Middle Way, when stating the views of the logicians, the word "definition" of "self-characteristic" and "general characteristic" is combined with the object to explain. Second, because of "similarity and dissimilarity," by showing the uncommon meaning of self and general, their definitions are respectively: things that exist without the mixture of place, time, and nature, and the imputation of place, time, and nature appearing in common. Or, things that exist uncommonly, and the imputation of appearing in common. As the Compendium on Valid Cognition says, "That is a kind of thing that appears uncommon, it is one's own definition," which can be understood from the direct and indirect meanings of what is said. Third, some think that the thing that exists without the mixture of place, time, and nature does not exist in the Consequentialist school, because it is the definition of self-characteristic in the school that says things exist. This is pervasive, because in the school that says things exist, the negation of the meaning of self-characteristic is the ultimate truth in the Consequentialist school. Therefore, some say that what can function in the ultimate truth is the definition of self-characteristic. This is unreasonable, because the newly produced thing that did not exist before is it.
