Refuting production from the body. First: Rang. If the body is permanent, then the gradually arising breaths from the body can gradually produce moments of consciousness, is that what you think? Gong. Breaths that arise gradually, as the subject, should not arise gradually, because there is no cause for gradual arising. Rang. If it arises gradually from its own similar previous one, is that what you think? Possessor of a body, as the subject, the first moment of breath should not arise, because there is no similar previous one that produces the first moment of breath. Breath. Breath, as the subject, you should be multiple, because you arise from multiple places of origin. If you accept that, then for one possessor of a body, as the subject, multiple streams of consciousness should arise simultaneously, because multiple breaths arise simultaneously. Second: Rang. If multiple breaths gathering at the same time are the cause of a single consciousness, therefore multiple consciousnesses do not arise simultaneously, is that what you think? Consciousness, as the subject, even if one part of the breath is incomplete, you should not arise, because the gathering of all parts of the breath is your direct cause. Qing. Just as the limbs of the breath exist, as the cause of consciousness, there is no fault, is that what you think? Possessor of a body, as the subject, due to the strength or weakness of the breath's movement, consciousness should transform into strength or weakness, because however the strength or weakness of the breath's movement exists, it is the direct cause of consciousness. This is pervasive (i.e., however the strength or weakness of the breath's movement exists, so does consciousness), because if a phenomenon does not increase or decrease following increase or decrease, then the phenomenon must not be produced from the proximate cause of that phenomenon. Third, avoiding similarity to oneself: If the fault of simultaneously producing multiple thoughts also applies to you, is that what you think? Rang. Thoughts, as the subject, you do not arise multiple simultaneously, because you are certain that each previous thought has the ability to produce each subsequent thought. The reason is established, when thoughts are particularly attached to sound, the ability of the immediately preceding condition for producing the eye consciousness that apprehends form diminishes, therefore the eye consciousness that apprehends form does not arise. Rang. If multiple consciousnesses first arise simultaneously from the body, and then each previous consciousness only produces one subsequent consciousness, is that what you think? Body, as the subject, the ability to simultaneously produce multiple consciousnesses later reverses, this is unreasonable, because the ability to simultaneously produce multiple consciousnesses earlier, you (body) are permanent.

Regarding that, there are two ways to refute erroneous arguments: argument and response. First: If asked, at the time of a sentient being's death, the dharma, the mind exists alone, it should follow that it exists alone. Because the mind exists, without a body to rely on. Second, there are three: explaining the two causes of future rebirths, refuting the proof of no connection, and establishing the proof of reasonable connection. First: If asked, a person with self-grasping, the dharma, there is no fault of the mind existing alone after death, because the last mind at the time of death becomes the co-operative cause of the future body. Then, what is the immediate cause of the future body? Answer: The future body, the dharma, you have an immediate cause, because your immediate cause is born from the birth place of the last senses at the time of death. Second: Answer, the body and mind at the time of death, the dharma, are not the cause and condition of the future body and mind, because the cause and condition of the future body and mind are not seen. That, the dharma, that reason for establishment is not correct, because that reason for establishment has already been said to be incorrect. If not seeing cannot refute, but it is refuted by the signs of being senses and being mind, etc. Senses, etc., the dharma, you are not a correct sign to establish that the senses at the time of death are not the immediate cause of the future senses, because your sign does not establish the pervasion of that. Third: Answer, the senses at the time of death, the dharma, if other conditions are complete and there is no obstacle, then they can produce the future senses, because if other conditions are complete and there is no obstacle, then the ability to produce the future senses is certain. Just as the previous senses of this life produce the future senses. If asked, the senses of this life are not produced from the previous senses, but from the permanent body. For one sentient being, the dharma, it should follow that many similar kinds of senses are produced simultaneously, because its direct cause is the permanent body. If asked, the senses of this life are produced from the mind. Then, the future senses also, the dharma, should follow that they are produced from the mind, because the senses of this life are produced from the mind, for the same reason. Fourth, showing the conclusion established by refutation: Therefore, the mind of an ordinary person and an Arhat at the time of death, the dharma, the immediate cause is the body.
