Explaining the four phrases of the proof. Explaining the establishment of valid cognition and non-rejection. The first has two parts: explaining the four meanings grasped by the four phrases, and elaborating on the latter two. The first part: In summary, the essence alone should be proven, one's own desire, and non-rejection. Thus, among the five mentioned, the four characteristics of the subject, which is to be proven for the sake of others, are grasped by the words "essence," the particle "alone," "desire," and "self," namely: to eliminate what is not established by the opponent, what is not being presented as a proof, what is expressed in meaning even if not spoken in words, i.e., what is taken as an object by desire, and what the debater himself has promised to prove. Why is non-rejection not mentioned here? Because the first four characteristics are merely characteristics of what is to be proven for the sake of others. For example, when the Samkhyas prove that the eyes, etc., act for the sake of others, when arranging the collection and accumulation, the eyes, etc., possess all four characteristics when acting for their own sake. This is the same in meaning as promising to prove what is explained from the perspective of reasoning. If non-rejection is complete on top of this, it becomes a correct thesis. In order to know this, non-rejection is not mentioned here. In summary, it is mentioned because it is the occasion for showing all the characteristics of correctness. Not understanding this key point, and making this a summary and non-rejection an elaboration, one does not understand the power of the two treatises that the four characteristics are grasped by the words, and that the promise is also valid cognition, and that it is intended to be uncontradicted by words. Here, the sequential explanation of self and desire in the first verse is due to the order of the summary, while the reverse in the latter is due to the order of the elaboration. The reason for making the order in the elaboration in this way is that when desire is shown as what is to be proven in the case of wishing, since all the meanings of the scriptures promised by the debater are objects of wishing, there is a doubt as to whether it is what is to be proven in the case. In order to dispel this, it is due to the need to mention oneself. In the summary, in order to apply desire to the debater himself, one's self is mentioned first. As for others, if even a slight doubt does not arise, what need is there to mention certainty? The second has two parts: elaborating on desire and elaborating on self.

This is an explanation of "ground." The first part has three points: Showing that the intention in the heart is what needs to be proven; if it is not what needs to be proven, then very absurd inferences would follow; in this way, other wrong views are also refuted. The first part has three points: An example of the intention in the heart being what needs to be proven; refuting others' arguments against it; explaining the necessity of explaining it in this way. The first point is: By the word "intention," even if it is not spoken verbally, it is shown that the intention in the heart is what needs to be proven in the present context. So, what is an example of this? Even if it is not spoken verbally, the collection of meanings that the opponent intends in their heart, which is universally accepted, is what needs to be proven in the present context, because the intention in the heart is what needs to be proven. For example, when the Samkhya school proves that the eyes, etc., serve others, the eyes, etc., serving oneself is what needs to be proven in the present context. The second part has three points: Eliminating the self-utterance becoming meaningless; eliminating contradictory symbols becoming one; eliminating the lack of understanding of intention. The first point is: If by the word "intention," it is refuted that what the opponent does not want to admit in their heart is what needs to be proven, then the self-utterance would become meaningless, is that so? Even if the word "intention" refutes that all intentions other than the opponent's need to be proven, the word "self" as the subject, is necessary, because it can eliminate the doubt that the opponent thinks that all the content of the scriptures they admit needs to be proven, because it is done for that purpose. The reason is established, because in the commentary on the Compendium, it is said: "The word 'self' is to show what is admitted without relying on the treatises." The second point is: If only the opponent's intention in their heart is what needs to be proven, then all contradictory symbols would depend on the intention in the heart and become one, is that so? Contradictory symbols, as the subject, the same intention in the heart will become multiple depending on the way of expression, because depending on the way of expression, sometimes it is expressed from the perspective of dharmas, sometimes it is expressed from the perspective of subjects, and sometimes it is expressed from the perspective of the differences between the two, therefore it will become multiple. This is from the Pramāṇaviniścaya: "It is sometimes differentiated from the perspective of dharmas, sometimes from the perspective of subjects, and sometimes from the perspective of their differences." This is the view explained by Sakya Pandita, and affirmation and negation have been explained in detail in the general meaning. The third point is: Eyes, etc., serving oneself
