If it is not certain, it cannot be used as an object of understanding. The second case has two aspects: there is no determining factor for the relationship of arising; there is no determining factor for the relationship of a single entity. The first case has three aspects: the actual existence of a determining factor for the relationship of arising; this is not established in the case of the self and life; refuting arguments against the determining factor. The first case is: both cause and effect exist on a basis where they can appear. Initially, neither is observed. Then, after seeing the cause, the effect is seen; or initially, the effect is observed, and then, after not seeing the cause, the effect is not seen, these are the subjects of the argument. They are determined to be cause and effect by valid cognition, because they are determined to be cause and effect by any of the three: direct perception, inference, or scriptural authority. The second case is: life, etc., are the subjects of the argument. Because you are the effect of the self, you are not a sign that makes one understand another self from you, because you are not the effect of the self. Because if you exist, the existence of the self is uncertain; and if the self does not exist, it is impossible for you not to exist, because the self is eternally existent, so it is impossible for it not to exist at any time. The third case has four aspects: if there is reversal, it is not an effect; refuting that even if there is reversal, it is still an effect; refuting examples of reversal of the cause; summarizing and showing how there is no reversal. The first case is: if merely because it is the effect of a certain phenomenon, that phenomenon is reversed, then the reversal of that phenomenon is uncertain. For example, although smoke is the effect of fire, if the fire is reversed, the reversal of the smoke is uncertain, because the smoke arises from the crown of Indra, who has no fire. If someone thinks this way, then, the different natures of effects are the subjects of the argument. If they are not produced by what they consider to be their own cause, but are produced by other things, then how can they be the nature produced by what they consider to be their own cause? Because they are produced from their respective causes. Furthermore, things are the subjects of the argument. They are of various natures, because they are produced from the various different abilities of different collections of causes. If different collections of causes do not produce different effects, then these three existences (the three realms) are the subjects of the argument. They will become one nature, because nothing is produced differently by different causes and the same collection of causes. The latter sign is established by valid cognition. The second case is: if a hundred

If it is said that the head of a hundred gods can produce a fruit different from the fruit of fire, and also cannot produce a fruit different from the fruit of fire, but produces the fruit of fire, such as smoke, therefore the refutation of smoke to fire is wrong. Then, the head of a hundred gods, as the subject, you have lost the nature of being of one essence, because it both produces the fruit of the collection of fire existing and does not produce the fruit of the collection of fire existing. One of the heads of a hundred gods, as the subject, you have two natures, fire existing and fire not existing, because you both produce the fruit of the collection of fire existing and produce the fruit of the collection different from fire. Therefore, what you consider to be the cause of smoke, such as the head of a hundred gods, as the subject, you clearly have fire, but you cannot produce smoke. If you have the nature of producing smoke, then you must have fire; if you do not have the nature of producing smoke, then how can smoke arise from you? It will not arise. Therefore, cause and effect, as the subject, the cause can only produce its own effect, and the effect can only arise from its own cause, in this way mutually determining the nature, if the effect is the producer, then the effect must be the nature of the cause; if the effect is not the nature of the cause, then the effect will not arise. Therefore, just as seeing the nature of the cause directly, the effect, such as smoke, as the subject, even if you are seen, it is possible to infer that there is your own cause on some basis by taking it as a sign, because establishing your own cause on some basis requires possessing three ways. The third is, if there are many different collections of causes producing one kind of fruit, such as different water and milk producing one rotten fruit. Then, water and milk, as the subject, just as you can produce one rotten fruit, taking this example, how can one kind of fruit be produced from many different collections of causes? It will not be produced, because you have the same kind of moistening ability, therefore you can produce one rotten fruit, because both of you are the same kind of cause, so you must produce one kind of fruit.
