Because it is the basis for appearing to be related. In reality, even if there is no such refutation and establishment, the object appearing in conceptualization, as the subject, you want to rely on the terms of refutation and establishment, because in the mistaken appearance, those refutations and establishments appear to be related. If asked how the meaning of sound is established? The conceptualization that performs refutation and establishment, as the subject, the meaning of sound that appears to you, even if it doesn't exist in reality, can be said to exist, because merely by the application of sound, the meaning of sound appears to you. Second, if instead of truly performing refutation and establishment on the meaning of sound, you truly perform refutation and establishment on its own characteristic, then objects such as vases, as the subject, if you establish one of your qualities, such as impermanence, or negate one such as permanence, then it would follow that you establish all the natures of being made, etc., and negate all non-made, etc. Because for you, made, impermanent, etc., and negating non-made and permanent, etc., are all without different self-natures, being the same substance. If that is not established, if the substances are different, then establishing made, impermanent, etc., as the subject, the subject being like a vase, in the way that both of you are, it would follow that you two would not become included in one vase, because you two are substances different from the vase. Just as the establishment of other vases and other cloths does not include being mutually compatible on the same basis. Also, negating permanence and negating non-made, as the subject, it would follow that they do not include being mutually compatible on one vase, because they are substances different from the vase. Just as negating non-vase and non-cloth, etc., does not include being mutually compatible on the same basis. Or, made and impermanent are different substances, having been done previously, then connect with negating non-made and establishing impermanence. The third has three: there is no increase or decrease, but it appears like increase or decrease; it does not exist in reality, but is not harmed by valid cognition; it is a mistake, but there is no understanding that it is a mistake. First, in reality there is no refutation or establishment, but as the basis of various contradictory qualities such as made and impermanent, the object appearing in conceptualization, such as a vase, as the subject, in your case, from the perspective of elimination, it appears that the refuting quality decreases and the establishing quality increases, because you are controlled by one, establishing one such as impermanence, that quality appears to be shown, and all other made, etc., are negated.

Since no acceptance or rejection has been made, it is like being neutral. If you negate one permanent dharma, then that permanent dharma becomes empty, because it appears as if it depends on the other dharmas that have not been negated. Secondly, the fact that something does not exist in reality, i.e., the terms of affirmation and negation of the object-possessor, how does the conceptual mind show it? That dharma. As you have examined it, whether the entities of dharma and dharmata exist or not, without examination, on things that are distinct in their own characteristics, through dependence, it is not harmed by valid cognition to accept it as a term, because you are the meaning of worldly words arising from the habits of beginningless terms. If the self-characteristics are different, then how is it? The eye faculty is a dharma. You can say that you are different from one, because eye consciousness is its result, and sound consciousness has no result, so it is different from not being the cause of eye consciousness, and it is different from being the cause of sound consciousness, both of which have the same meaning for you. Thirdly, for the self-characteristics that have just been said to be different, the conceptual mind that performs affirmation and negation through dependence is a false illusion, because in fact there is no increase in the dharma to be established and no decrease in the dharma to be refuted, but it is a thought that appears as if the dharma to be established is newly increased and the dharma to be refuted is newly decreased. Then, does one know that it is an illusion? Those conceptual minds that perform affirmation and negation, dharma, do not themselves know that it is a false illusion, because through some connection between that term and those applicable objects, the appearance that appears to oneself is not in accordance with the external object, but it is regarded as the external object, so the appearance and speculation are combined into one, therefore it is like this. Secondly, even if it is established, it is not certain that there is no homogeneity, because you think that there is no homogeneity with a self, so it will not return from life, etc., which is unreasonable, because that self, dharma, has not been determined by valid cognition to be non-existent, but becomes a doubt of existence or non-existence, because you correctly apply the reason for proving existence on a living body. If Buddhists admit no-self, therefore it is established that it does not exist? The Buddhist admits no-self, dharma, you
