There are three. Explaining the need to separately state the words of scripture. Explaining the need to separately state one's own words. The first need is to dispel disputes. The first has three aspects: For a basis established by direct perception, scripture itself is not a harm. For a basis established by scripture, scripture itself is a harm. Therefore, the need to separately show faith is accomplished. The first is: An object established by direct valid cognition, which does not rely on the establishing scripture, such as sound, is the subject. Even if you, through reasoning, contradict the treatise that shows sound to be permanent, and you assert and vow that it is impermanent, even though it is not established by valid cognition, that scripture does not harm the object of adherence to your vow of impermanence. Rather, they become mutually obstructive, because your treatise showing permanence and your vow of impermanence are both contradictory vows without proof, and their power is the same. For example, like my own words contradicting each other when I say, "My mother is a widow." The previously accepted treatise showing sound to be permanent is also the subject. At the time when the power of the object is involved, it is the nature of the debater's own words, because the debater himself has spoken words of the opposite side established by direct valid cognition. So, if sound is established as impermanent by valid cognition, and then one vows that sound is impermanent, is it merely mutually obstructive? If both are not valid, then they are mutually obstructive. But among those two statements, the vow that sound is established as impermanent by valid cognition, and then one vows that sound is impermanent, is the subject. It will harm the other vow that sound is permanent, because you and that vow have made contradictory vows on the same basis, and you have the valid cognition that establishes it. If contradictory words lacking a valid basis mutually obstruct each other, and not just scripture alone causes harm, then the scriptural vow that shows sound to be permanent, is the subject. How does it harm the vow that sound is impermanent, which has the same power as itself, and the subsequent inference that realizes sound is impermanent, which has a truthful meaning? It does not harm it, because it lacks the reasoning of proof. Furthermore, the backing
