It is not that multiple [consciousnesses] do not arise, but rather that they definitely arise one by one. If they do not arise one by one from the power of the previous consciousness, then, an individual who sees the meaning, because of the reason that there is definitely only one mind, it is not necessarily the case that only one consciousness arises at a time, because sometimes multiple consciousnesses, such as apprehending form, arise simultaneously. Furthermore, when the five objects and five faculties are complete, and the previous mental consciousness engages with all five objects equally, that is, when there is no particular attachment to any one of them, it should not be the case that the cognition of other objects does not arise. Because you only have one mind. Furthermore, all previous and subsequent consciousnesses should arise simultaneously, because they arise merely from being associated with a permanent self and mind. If you say that because the agent is only one mind, the result of the action, cognition, also arises only as one, and not all simultaneously, then, how is it that one lamp is seen by many people, and does not produce multiple self-cognizing cognitions? Because it is one. Furthermore, if the permanent mind does not produce multiple cognitions, they will arise simultaneously, and if not, then that mind will not have the ability to produce multiple consciousnesses even gradually, because there is no difference from not producing multiple consciousnesses later. This reasoning that prevents the permanent mind from producing multiple consciousnesses also refutes the view of the Lokayata that a permanent body gradually produces consciousnesses, and the view of the Samkhya that a permanent intelligent person gradually enjoys objects, because if the permanent body and person are the agents of multiple consciousnesses and multiple actions, they will do them simultaneously, and if not, they cannot do them gradually. If you say that each consciousness arises from the qualities of the self, from compositional factors, then, if the compositional factors are permanent and exist from the beginning, then all consciousnesses will arise simultaneously, and if they do not exist, then from where do they arise later? If you say that they arise from the previous consciousness, then, although that is the case, Buddhists, your own view that the subsequent consciousness arises from the previous consciousness is established, because the subsequent consciousness arises from compositional factors, and it arises from the previous consciousness. Second, if the previous consciousness is the immediate cause of the subsequent self-cognizing consciousness, then

If it is said that because it is not an object of apprehension, the subsequent consciousness will shift to another object? The former consciousness, as the subject of debate, you possess the characteristic of being the object of apprehension of the subsequent consciousness, because you yourself are the direct cause of generating the subsequent consciousness that apprehends you. This is pervasive. Generally speaking, for things that are objects of apprehension, the aspect of being an object of apprehension is none other than directly generating the consciousness that apprehends it. If it is said that directly generating apprehension is not the characteristic of being apprehended, because appearance directly generates apprehension but is not an object of apprehension. Appearance, as the subject of debate, you do not lack the part of directly generating apprehension that is not apprehended, because the part of you that directly generates apprehension is of the same substance as that object of apprehension. For example, like a red-hot iron lump. If it is said that appearance is with parts, so it is the cause of generating consciousness, but its other parts etc. are not apprehended, similarly, the former consciousness is also the cause of the latter, but some of its parts are not apprehended. The former consciousness, as the subject of debate, through subtlety etc. becomes the generator of the subsequent consciousness, but there is no case of not being apprehended, because it is partless, i.e., without directional components. The third part has three aspects: direct refutation, eliminating disputes, and concluding. The first part is: the first consciousness has two abilities: to be the object of apprehension of the subsequent consciousness and to generate the nature of the subsequent consciousness. If it is said that the ability of the former consciousness to be the object of apprehension of the subsequent consciousness will disappear, but when the nature of generating the subsequent consciousness does not disappear, the subsequent consciousness will arise, and will it shift to another object? Generally speaking, for things that have the nature of being apprehended, as the subject of debate, even if your ability to apprehend disappears, it is unreasonable for the ability to generate not to disappear. Because the part of you that is the object of apprehension of the apprehending consciousness is not a different substance from the part that directly generates apprehension, but is of the same substance. For example, the form etc. of the object of apprehension is also the object of apprehension of the apprehending consciousness, if it is not like that, it cannot directly benefit the apprehending consciousness. Therefore, from the characteristic of being an object of apprehension, form etc. must be something that directly benefits the apprehending consciousness.
