Establishing the sameness of three. Avoiding disputes regarding the sameness of three conditions. First, the happiness and so on of the retinue of sense consciousness are the subject of debate. Why is it not knowable? It is knowable because it arises from the three conditions that are not other than the cause of sense consciousness. This is pervasive because all effects that are similar, similar to that, and dissimilar, possessing dissimilar natures, are pervasively produced by real causes that are similar to that and dissimilar to that, in sequence. Second, if it is said that the reason that arises from one condition is not established, then the happiness and so on of the retinue of sense consciousness are the subject of debate. It has a cause that is the same as the three conditions of sense consciousness because if there is an object together with its meaning, a sense faculty that is unimpaired and capable, and a mind that attends to it as it is, then you are seen to arise from that. And the mental sense consciousness is also the same as that and arises from those three conditions. Third, if it is said that although those two arise from three conditions, it is not established that they arise from the same cause because happiness and suffering arise corporeally from actions of dharma and non-dharma, and consciousness arises knowingly from formations, then the happiness and so on of the retinue of sense consciousness and the sense consciousness are the subject of debate. They arise directly from those three conditions. They do not arise directly from other formations and actions because when those three conditions are absent and present, you are seen to not arise and to arise directly from some cause, and therefore you do not follow formations and actions. Then there should be no difference in happiness and suffering, etc., because the three causes and conditions are the same. If that is said, the happiness and suffering of the retinue of sense consciousness are the subject of debate. Although the three causes and conditions are the same, it is not contradictory that there are differences in happiness and suffering, etc., because the differences within those three conditions themselves cause different happiness and suffering, etc., from objects that are attractive and unattractive, etc. For example, in the case where the object and sense faculty are the same, the mental consciousness that arises through transmission also gives rise to different clarity, non-clarity, doubt, and so on, due to its own internal differences. The second has two parts: In the aspect of two consciousnesses arising successively, there is no other experience.

Regarding the aspect of two consciousnesses arising simultaneously, there is no other experience. The first aspect has five points: refuting simultaneous experience by other consciousnesses; refuting later arising experience by other consciousnesses; refuting one consciousness holding two; refuting merely holding pleasure, etc.; refuting merely holding the apprehended. The first point is: if pleasure, etc., are not self-aware, but are known by another consciousness relying on the same entity as oneself, then is it known by the sense consciousness arising simultaneously with oneself, or by the later arising mental consciousness? If it is the former, then for objects such as form, etc., because of what is closer, the sense consciousness and pleasure, etc., arise, that sense consciousness is the subject. Having abandoned its own object, form, etc., how can it know pleasure, etc.? It cannot, because its own object is form, etc. The second point is: if initially the sense consciousness holds the object, and then the mental consciousness holds pleasure, etc., then are the objects and pleasure, etc., of these two consciousnesses held alternately? The consciousness experiencing pleasure, etc., is the subject. When experiencing pleasure, etc., it will not appear without interruption, because the experience of pleasure, etc., is interrupted by the holding of form, etc., before and after. Similarly, it also applies to holding form, etc. If the experience of pleasure, etc., is interrupted, but because of rapid operation, it appears without interruption, then the consciousness holding form, etc., is also the subject. Why is it that without experiencing pleasure, etc., form, etc., appear without interruption? It should be so, because the rapid operation is the same. The third point is: if the sense consciousness simultaneously holds the object, form, etc., and pleasure, etc., that are simultaneous with oneself, then the unerring mind of the sense is the subject. You, one consciousness, with the object, form, etc., and pleasure, etc., simultaneous with oneself, as the apprehended, are not simultaneously knowing, because if it is your apprehended, then it must be form, etc., and when you arise, there is no established ability for pleasure, etc., simultaneous with oneself, because pleasure, etc., simultaneous with oneself are not your cause, but you arise from the object, form, etc. If the aggregation of blue, etc., can generate eye consciousness, but each of the blue, etc.
