The Carvaka (materialist) school asserts that neutral tactile sensation is a quality unique to wind. Therefore, regarding the visible earth, water, and fire, the thesis is: they do not possess neutral tactile sensation, because neutral tactile sensation is not observed. This reason (hetu) is the subject (paksha) and is a valid, non-erroneous pervasion, because in the contradictory instance, it is merely non-observation. If this is accepted, it contradicts what the teacher said in "The Differentiation of Wind": "If merely by not seeing, one were to prevent touch in visible things, that would not be reasonable." Secondly, if non-observation alone establishes non-existence, then consider mangoes with distinct tastes and potencies, and other mangoes similar in shape. The thesis is: they possess distinct tastes and potencies, because they are mangoes. When stated thus, the mango is the subject, and the pervasion to establish it is complete, because the contradictory instance for establishing it is merely non-observation. If accepted, then the reason for establishing it becomes a valid reason, because the property of the subject and the pervasion for establishing it are complete. This cannot be accepted, because due to differences in the quality of the place and the actions performed, the substance of the mango appears different in terms of potency and taste. Therefore, seeing one mango with a distinct taste and potency does not necessarily mean that other mangoes have the same distinct taste and potency. Thirdly, is that which does not perceive the contradictory side the sole means of establishing the absence of a reason (hetu) on the contradictory side, or is it not? Generally, not perceiving a certain property does not necessarily establish the absence of that property. The reason is accepted, because the Carvakas believe that the self exists in the living body, the Lokayatas believe that consciousness exists in the earth, and the Samkhyas, who are included by the term "etc.," believe that the effect exists in the cause even though it is not perceived. There are four points regarding the third: If there is a connection, the pervasion is established. If there is no connection, there is no going or coming. The way the connection is shown in the example. Through this way, the pervasion of the refuting reason is established. First, merely not seeing does not establish pervasion. Therefore, the nature of the reason to be taken, which is merely existence and is inherently connected, the opposite of the dharma to be established, which has become the very nature of the reason, is transformed by the very nature of the reason. For example, just as impermanence, which is inherently connected to being made, changes, so too does being made change.

The subsequent inference, that is, taking as a sign, becoming the opposite of the dharma to be established, thereby the reason of the effect will be reversed, because the effect has no confusion in pervasion and contraposition with respect to the cause. For example, just as the fire that is the cause of smoke is reversed, the effect, smoke, will also be reversed. The second is, if the connection between the sign and the dharma is not established, then the other sign is the subject, how can the power of one dharma being reversed cause it to be reversed? It cannot be reversed, because there is no connection with the dharma. Some people do not have horses, that is, they do not have them, so do they not have livestock? Because there is no connection, livestock will not be reversed. Similarly, one sign is the subject, one sign is close, that is, it exists, then how can the other dharma be close or exist? It cannot exist, because there is no connection with the dharma. Some people have livestock, that is, they have it, then do they also have horses? They will not have them. The third has three: even if there are no dissimilar examples, it can be understood by reason. Reason shows to those who do not understand examples. For those who understand reason, there are two ways of stating the argument. The first is, in this way, because of the nature of the relationship, pervasion and contraposition are established, and in order to understand the object to be established by reason, the nature of the relationship has no other possibilities than identity of essence and arising from that. These two are also shown through examples, because in similar examples it is necessary to show pervasion, and in dissimilar examples it is necessary to show contraposition. Then, in order to show contraposition, is it necessary to have dissimilar examples of established entities? The explanation is that, in order to establish contraposition, for these two signs of proof, as the subject, it is not necessary to have a basis for the establishment of entities in the examples of dissimilar dharmas, because even if there are no dissimilar examples of established entities, contraposition can also be understood by stating the reason that the sign does not exist on the dissimilar side. In the past, most of the time, even if there were no dissimilar examples of entities, it could be understood by stating that those dharmas do not exist, which shows the power of the word "also". Moreover, between this passage and the following verse, there is no other conjunction in the self-commentary except the word "in this way", so the above-mentioned non-existence needs the following text to show its meaning.
