A conceptual thought that agrees with meaning has three characteristics: for a form that is not the function of a tree, it appears as a nature similar to the function of a tree; it has the seed, i.e., the cause, of the mere entity that is different from the entity of a tree and non-tree; and what appears to itself is devoid of the meaning of a tree. Why is that? Because the sound "tree" has the object of excluding things other than a tree, because it arises through dependence on the function of a tree, and has the object of the nature of a conceptual thought that clings to an external tree. Third, there are four ways to refute the arguments of other schools on this: refuting the fallacy of mutually dependent cognitions; refuting that without something to be cut off, there is no exclusion or inclusion; refuting the examination of whether the opposite exists in reality; refuting the argument that a common basis cannot change. The first has four points: stating the fallacy stated by others; refuting it with the same reason; generating certainty with the answer of reality; establishing that all sounds have definite grasping. The first point is: if conceptual thought does not grasp by establishing either tree or non-tree, but only grasps by exclusion, then, conceptual thought, as a dharma, you grasp both tree and non-tree, it must be that cognition is mutually dependent, that is, mutually grasping, and it is necessary to grasp the other first. Because you must grasp the meaning of a tree by excluding from non-tree, that is, excluding non-tree, and non-tree must also be determined by excluding tree. This is pervasive, because without grasping tree and non-tree, it is impossible to exclude them. If you admit it, then conceptual thought, as a dharma, if there is no prior grasping of tree and non-tree, then both tree and non-tree will not be grasped. Because there is the fault of mutually dependent cognition of tree and non-tree, therefore, it is impossible to apply sound to the exclusion of excluding non-tree, and names can only be applied to the common entity in the way of establishment, which is the view of some people such as young women. The second point is that for those who apply names by excluding others and point out the fault of mutually dependent cognition, when applying the name of a tree, is non-tree completely excluded or not? If it is completely excluded, then the person who applies the name of a tree, as a dharma, how does he know non-tree at the time of applying the name of a tree? He must not know.

If, at the time of my agreement, there is no holding of the meaning of a tree, that is, because there is none. The pervasion is accepted. The reason is that now, in order to know that tree, one seeks the expression of a tree and accomplishes a tree. If it is asserted, that (subject) is a dharma. From the expression of a tree, those non-trees are not excluded as expressible, it follows. Because at the time of the expression of a tree, non-trees are not known. The sign (reason), pervasion is accepted. If it is asserted, non-tree (subject). After the word 'tree,' the application of names to trees, that is, those usages, you, having completely abandoned them, will not change in usage, it follows. Because the word 'tree' has not excluded you. For example, the distinctions of trees, such as shava, etc., because they are not excluded in the realm of the expression of a tree, after abandoning it from the expression, it will not be used. If, at the time of making an agreement, one does not first prevent other non-trees, but in the manner of merely accomplishing, one fully reveals another common meaning that exists in one thing, like the shava present in front, and then says, 'This is a tree,' by making an agreement on the common meaning, it will also become an agreement on all that is manifest. And after that word, at the time of applying names, one will also understand that common meaning or the manifest that possesses it, and therefore, there is no fault of mutual dependence or the possibility of applying to non-trees, if one thinks so. Then, for that too, 'This with branches is also a tree,' in the manner of cutting off the non-possessing, or 'Only this is a tree,' in the manner of cutting off the possessing of others, like the first agreement, at the time of naming, after excluding non-trees from the word 'tree,' it will not be used, it follows. Because at the time of agreement, the expression of a tree did not exclude non-trees. And, like the second case, after excluding non-trees, the expression of a tree will be established, and if so, non-trees will not be excluded, it follows. Because non-trees are not known, because trees are not known, such a consequence cannot be reversed. The third case is that, for the manifest things of trees and non-trees, because one sees separately the presence or absence of the common entity of a tree, at the time of agreement, by making an agreement that 'Only this is a tree,' there is no fault of applying to non-trees at the time of naming, and because one makes an agreement on the common meaning, it will also become an agreement on all that is excluded. Therefore, because it pervades all. For those who speak of exclusion, this is not similar to them, because the common meaning does not exist in things, and the meaning at the time of agreement is obstructed, so the meaning at the time of naming will not be understood, it follows. If one says so, like us, the fruits of trees, etc.
