For those who directly perceive the impermanence and other qualities of sound, as well as the singular nature of sound itself, as the subject, if there are other aspects not seen by direct perception, what is there to be examined by inference? There is no need for examination. Because all phenomena that are the same in essence as oneself and the established phenomena are seen simultaneously by direct perception. The second case is: Then, how does inference operate in this case? The direct perception that grasps sound, as the subject, after you see that sound is impermanent, is there a need to use inference to understand that sound is impermanent? If, because of similarities, other associations arise, or because of clinging to permanence, one does not attribute other permanent qualities to sound, then you do not need to use inference to understand that sound is impermanent. However, just as seeing something similar to white and mistaking it for silver, because of similarities, other associations arise, and one clings to the idea that sound is permanent. To eliminate this error, you must use inference to understand that sound is impermanent. The third case is that, for that reason, the sign and inference used to prove that sound is impermanent, as the subject, are used through elimination. Because by directly perceiving the entity of sound, one can see all qualities such as impermanence, there is no need to use inference to see these qualities. However, because of error, one cannot be certain that sound is impermanent, so to ascertain this, you extensively use inference. This verse is a summary verse. The second point is that if, not only through direct perception, but also through inference, one grasps by establishing the entity of sound, then will the inference that understands the impermanence of sound, as the subject, grasp all the qualities of sound, such as being produced? Because by establishing one quality of sound—impermanence—all qualities of sound can be ascertained. If this is admitted, then other valid cognitions do not need to be used. If someone asks, will you also face the same consequence? Then, for the case of using inference through elimination, as the subject, if inference grasps one impermanence, then the fault of grasping all qualities will not arise here, because inference is used to eliminate superimposition. The third point is that if one uses it through establishment, there will be faults; if one uses it through elimination, there will be no faults. Therefore, as previously stated, the inference that relies on the sign has an object of elimination, and it should be proclaimed as such.

If it is established through other (means), then, the subject, such as sound, that subject, after you are seen by direct perception, it is impossible to establish impermanence with yourself as the reason and inference, because you have already been established by direct perception, then what other nature of yours that has not been established from direct perception is impermanent? Because there is none. Some people apply this to sudden inference, which contradicts the verses collected from the self-commentary. Second, if inference is considered to establish elimination by eliminating superimposition, then, in some (cases) where blue is seen directly without error, whatever is the cognition that ascertains blue, the subject, is not an elimination establishment, because there is no superimposition to be eliminated. It cannot be considered so, because whatever is a conceptualization with a general meaning, you acknowledge it as an elimination establishment. If asked so, then, the cognition that ascertains blue, the subject, has an object of elimination, because until its own function disappears, a person with self-continuity is able to have a cognition that is only capable of not superimposing other parts besides his own ascertained way. The reason is established, because this cognition that ascertains blue, the subject, is known to enter into a realm that is devoid of superimposing other parts besides its own ascertained way, because on one realm, you and the two minds of superimposition are the nature of the harmer and the harmed. Third, the ascertainment of the realm of impermanence of being made on sound and sound are also, the subject, you and they have different objects, not synonyms, because whatever is superimposed on sound, such as not being made, permanent, etc., because you also enter into as many numbers as the to-be-eliminated, therefore, that is why. Fourth, other than establishing for the sake of eliminating each superimposition, if an indivisible and unique object like a vase is pervaded by one, such as the sound of saying the vase is made or the wisdom of ascertaining this, that is, if it is established in the manner of establishment, then, the sound conceptualization of the vase being made, the subject, other dharmas of the vase that you have not made into an object, other sound wisdoms are not made into an object, because you have made all the dharmas of the vase into an object. If you think so, the sound of the vase is impermanent
