Because the terms "basis identity" and "dharma and possessor of dharma" are not mentioned. Third, this meaning of words that is the object of the terms dharma and possessor of dharma, and the very basis identity mentioned earlier, is the subject of dharma. Things do not exist in their own characteristics, because although they do not exist in reality, they are spoken of as they appear in conceptualization, just as they are known in the world. Therefore, the previous statement that "this meaning of words" is applied to the general, because in the context of "how it is imputed," it has already been shown that the general does not exist in the ultimate sense, and because "basis identity" and "dharma and possessor of dharma" are applied to things that do not exist in the ultimate sense, the special meaning of the statement "this meaning of words" is not understood. Fourth, what is the necessity of establishing terms even though they do not exist in reality? The establishment of the difference between dharma and possessor of dharma for one thing, and how the difference is "basis identity," and how the non-difference is the establishment of the general, without examining the meaning of that very thing, but as it is known in the world, relying solely on what is known in the world, the establishment of what is to be proven and what proves it, which is done by the wise, is the subject of dharma. It is necessary, because it is for the sake of entering into the realization of the ultimate truth of self-characteristic reality. This, because of mistaking appearance, permanence, and oneness as real, and engaging in negation and affirmation, the statement "obtaining the self-characteristic of the object of entry" should be applied to everything. Fifth, the meaning of the ultimate truth, the things of self-characteristic, are the subject of dharma. You, for it, establishing one entity on many, and establishing many terms on one, is the confusion of mind, that is, illusion. Because many do not mix into one with their own entity, and one does not become many. This is the general. This is the particular. The different terms called "this is the general, this is the particular" are the subject of dharma. It enters into the meaning that appears to the mind of conceptualization, but does not actually enter into the self-characteristic, because it is the words and mind that mix many into one and divide one into many. It pervades, because such a thing is impossible in the self-characteristic. If what appears to the mind is false, then how can dharma be different? For the aspect of conceptualization, is the subject of dharma. In the appearance of illusion, the many differences of dharma are distinguished, because in the appearance of illusion, it appears as things that are different from many other different things. Sixth

Now, if it is said that the difference that the teacher Dignāga recognizes with inference is the difference distinguished by exclusion of others, does this contradict his statement that he apprehends the self-character mixed with the universal? Answer: This needs to be established. For the thought, "This is to be established, this is the reason for establishing," as the subject, it does not directly apprehend the self-character distinguished by impermanence, because the appearance of the self-character of things, that is, the appearance, disappears. Regarding Dignāga's statement, "Inference apprehends the difference mixed with the universal," as the subject, it should not be said that the self-character mixed with the universal is the object of inference, because the difference that appears in conceptual thought, that is, the universal mixed with the exclusion of others, is said to be the object of inference. That self-character, as the subject, whether it is the aspect of the universal or the aspect of the difference, etc., whether as the dharma or the subject, is not the direct object of conceptual thought, because many differences of dharmas cannot exist in one thing. Seventh, sound and conceptual thought, as the subject, do not actually directly recognize the nature of that self-character, which is different from all non-self-character things, because they actually enter in the manner of the universal. From "apprehending self-nature" to here is a summarizing verse. Second, explaining the way in which the sound of difference enters, there are four points: refuting the linguistic object accepted by other schools, establishing the linguistic object accepted by one's own school, refuting the arguments of other schools on this, and summarizing and explaining the meaning of both refutation and establishment. The first point has three: refuting that the self-character is a linguistic object, refuting that the real universal is a linguistic object, and refuting that possessing the universal is a linguistic object. First, regarding the statement, "The sound that actually recognizes it does not exist," the grammarians say: It is unreasonable that the self-character is not the direct object of expression of sound, because when saying, "Bring a pot," it is to take something that can fetch water and can function. Answer: The self-character, as the subject, is not the direct object of expression of the speaking sound, because it is not the direct object of language. It is pervasive because the speaking sound can show the meaning it explains. The reason is that language cannot be directly applied to the self-character, because at the time of naming, language is
