Because this is your characteristic. If the bottle and the shape of the bottle, etc., have no difference in meaning, then a term like "the shape of the bottle," which is used to express that the shape and the bottle are different, would be unnecessary, wouldn't it? The shape of the bottle, etc., those things, are distinguished in parts by the general bottle of the collection. Therefore, the sound of saying "the shape and smell of the bottle," etc., as a thing, is not unnecessary, because among the many shapes of the bottle, etc., the difference in the ability to generate eye consciousness, etc., of the shape and smell, etc., is specifically marked and shown. This aspect of using the sound of "the shape of the bottle" to show the difference in the ability of the shape of the bottle, as a thing, the smell of sandalwood, etc., can also be said to show the difference in ability, because the smell of sandalwood can represent the distinction from other smells. Second, the many parts themselves are also unsuitable as causes, there are two types: the collection of parts is unsuitable as a cause, and each part is unsuitable as a cause. The first case is: if, like the two views, the many parts of the body are the direct cause of consciousness, then, is it all the parts collected together as a cause, or each as a cause? If it is the first case, consciousness, as a thing, even if separated from a part of the body, such as the ear, you will not arise, because if all the parts of the body collected together are your (consciousness's) cause. The second case has three types: stating the damaging inference, refuting its error, and refuting the situation that is the same as itself. The first case is: if, like the second view, a being with a body, as a thing, will produce many material streams of consciousness at the same time, because each part of the body can produce individual consciousnesses. The second case has two types: one breath is unsuitable as a cause of consciousness, and multiple breaths are unsuitable as a cause of consciousness. The first case is: even if the body is multiple, multiple consciousnesses will not arise simultaneously, because there is only one exhalation and inhalation of breath, therefore it is certain that individual consciousnesses will arise from there, isn't it? Breathing in and out, as a thing, because you are one, it cannot determine individual consciousnesses, because you are the same as the body and many particles. If it is not established, because breath and body are permanently one, consciousness will arise sequentially.

If asked why, for a sentient being, it follows that many consciousnesses and minds clearly arise simultaneously. Because the cause of many consciousnesses and minds is the breath and the constant body that are always close, possessing unobstructed ability. If it is said that a single breath and constant body are not the cause of simultaneously producing multiple consciousnesses, but produce them sequentially, then the breath and constant body, it follows, are also not sequentially producing multiple consciousnesses. Because there is no difference from the previous constant that does not produce multiple consciousnesses. Furthermore, even if one allows a single inhalation and exhalation, a sentient being, it follows, cannot be certain that one inhalation and exhalation necessarily leads to one consciousness. Because even for something like exhaling, which is singular, a mind arises that grasps multiple meanings of before and after. If it is said that it is not pervasive, because a single indivisible mind knows multiple meanings of before and after, then that mind, it follows, should simultaneously grasp multiple meanings when grasping the previous meaning. Because there is no contradiction in simultaneously grasping multiple meanings of before and after when grasping the previous meaning. If it is not established, that mind, it follows, will also not sequentially grasp multiple meanings. Because there is no difference from not grasping multiple meanings later. The second part has two points: refuting production by multiple sequential occurrences; refuting production by multiple simultaneous occurrences. The first point: Because breath is not of its own kind, there are many moments of breath with sequential order of before and after, born from the constant body. If it is thought that these are the cause of sequential thoughts and concepts, then those breaths, it follows, how can they arise with sequential order? They should not. Because there is no cause for arising with the previous order. If it is said that it is not established, because the previous one of its own kind is the cause, then a sentient being, it follows, the first breath of this life will not arise. Because before the breath of this life, there is no previous one of the same kind that is the cause of that breath. If it is not established, there will be a previous life. Even if there is a previous one of the same kind of breath, the breath, it follows, must be multiple. Because it arises from multiple different sources.
