Because this is a syllogism that establishes sound as permanent by showing sound as impermanent instead of showing the permanent dharma. Therefore, that word is the subject. If impermanence is put forward as a reason to establish sound as permanent, it will eliminate the commitment that sound is permanent. For that reason, Dignāga said that the impermanence inherent in sound itself eliminates it. Even so, since impermanence is not put forward as a reason, it does not eliminate the commitment that sound is permanent. The second case is: sound is permanent, because everything is impermanent. This word is the subject. You are stating something other than everything, that is, not everything, as the reason for establishing sound as permanent, which is unreasonable. Because in other places, sound is associated with the dharma that contradicts everything, that is, permanence, and is stated by specifically excluding it, and it is a word that expresses everything as impermanent in general terms. Therefore, "because it is not everything" becomes the reason. Does the sound of everything refer to all knowables, or to everything that is not sound? In any case, it is a fault of the reason due to the non-establishment of pervasion, but it is not a fault of the subject due to being contrary to the commitment, as will be explained below. The third part has three aspects: the other that is universally known does not exist in sound; there is no pervasion in other than sound; for the reason that has pervasion, similarity must be excluded. First, if the meaning of other than everything refers to other than everything that is universally known, then sound is the subject. That which is not everything is also not suitable to be established as pervasion in you, because you are a distinction of all things. This is pervasion, because a general word does not abandon or reject its own distinction, just as the word tree does not abandon or reject deer. If a general word does abandon distinctions, such as when asked if deer are only trees, the answer is that deer are not only trees. The statement that sound alone is not everything is the subject. You are not showing that sound is not everything, because the general word "everything" that you hear will prevent it from applying only to sound itself. Merely preventing the word everything from applying to sound alone does not make sound not everything. For example, sometimes the statement that deer itself is not a tree does not negate that deer is a tree.

Just as the sound of "tree" is prevented from referring only to "wood." To this, some say that since sound is one aspect of all things, it is not all things. Then, all the individual differences of knowledge that are not sound are subjects. It should follow: they are not all things, because they are one aspect of all things. If admitted, then it should follow: all things will completely not exist, because sound is also not all things, and all the individual differences that are not sound are also not all things. Now, how will those who are devoted to monkey-jumping speculation, claiming that if there is no self, then it pervades all things, explain the meaning of these treatises? Second, if the meaning of "other than all things" is understood as "all things that are not sound are not all things," then it will become "sound is permanent, because it is sound." Subject, sound itself is the subject. The proof that sound is permanent is not established, because the subject is not different from sound. Pervasion, because the subject itself is established as the object of the reason, it is not established as the knower, because to become the knower, the basis of the known and the sign of the knower, the reason, must be different. Third, there are three: rejecting the similarity in the general nature of the reason; rejecting the similarity in establishing the general dharma in particular; rejecting the similarity in the sign of what can be heard. First, there are three: brief statement, detailed explanation, and summarizing the meaning. First: For all nature reasons, it is the subject. It should follow: the fault of establishing one aspect of the meaning of the proposition as the reason is the same, because in all your objects, the distinction between dharma, reason, and subject does not exist in meaning. If you say so, then the reason for proving that sound is impermanent by the reason of being made is not establishing one aspect of the meaning of the proposition as the reason, because the three, reason, dharma, and meaning, exist in different distinctions. Second: Then, will the three, reason, dharma, and meaning, be different in meaning? For the three, reason, dharma, and meaning, which prove that sound is impermanent by the reason of being made, for the objects of conventional truth, it will be prevented from being the same and different in ultimate truth, because in ultimate truth, if analyzed, it is not established as being the same and different. This is just a guess, if it is speculation, then it is just one.
