Because one does not realize the power of a single lamp, but realizes the power of the mandala, therefore. If admitted, the image of the mandala, as the subject, how could it not be the object of that consciousness? Because it is not the cause of that consciousness. Furthermore, if the mandala itself is the objective cause of that consciousness, that consciousness, as the subject, how could it depend on the objective condition, the lamp? Because the image of the mandala is your objective cause. There is no fault, if it is said that the combination of the lamp and the mandala is the objective cause of that consciousness, that consciousness, as the subject, the combination of the lamp and the mandala is also not your objective cause, because even without the mandala as the objective condition, you can exist merely by relying on the lamp with other conditions as the objective condition. Sixth, there are three ways to prove from the three differences of near, far, and middle: stating the thesis, refuting the fault, and summarizing the conclusion. First: If the mind is not manifested as the image of the grasper and the grasped, but there is an external object, and it appears as it is, then, one thing like a vase, as the subject, should not appear as clear or unclear, etc., in the consciousness due to the difference in the distance of the viewer, because it should abide in one of the states of clear or unclear. The second is divided into two: refuting the fault of having a difference in appearance, and refuting the fault of having a difference in function. The first is divided into three: refuting the fault of merely having a difference in appearance, refuting the difference between clear and unclear appearance, and asking for the reason for unclear appearance and refuting it. First: If the difference in appearance between the object and the sense faculty is different due to the distance, resulting in the same thing appearing in various states such as clear and unclear, then, is the difference in appearance between the object and the sense faculty obstructed by a screen between the object and the sense faculty, or is it not obstructed? If it is not obstructed, then for the same thing, the two located near and far, as the subject, should see the thing in the same way, because it is the same that the thing is not obstructed by a screen. If it is obstructed, then, the two, as the subject, should not see the thing in the same way, because it is the same that the thing is obstructed by a screen between it and its own sense faculty.

Secondly: If, when close, the appearance is clear and all parts of the object are seen, while when far, the appearance is unclear and some small parts of that object are not seen, therefore, for near and far, the same object appears differently as clear and unclear, then, is the object to be seen an external object that is one thing or many particles? If it is the former, then external objects such as vases, etc., when far away, the non-erroneous sense consciousness sees some parts of you and does not see other parts, from what does this difference arise? It should not, because it is an indivisible unity. If it is the latter, then that thing, the non-erroneous sense consciousness sees some parts of you and does not see other parts, from what does this difference arise? It should not, because you are many different subtle particles, located in the same place, then either all are seen or all are not seen. Furthermore, if the difference between clear and unclear appearance causes the same object to appear differently in the minds of people at different distances, then a single object such as a vase, etc., because of the different appearance, for what reason does it appear differently to the non-erroneous sense consciousness itself? It should not, because it is an undifferentiated unity. The sign is accepted. Thirdly: Furthermore, for the same object, when viewed from afar, if the appearance is unclear, then why is the appearance unclear? If the answer is: because it is obscured by dust, etc., then ask: why is it not the case that dust, etc., obscure the appearance here when near? If the answer is: when near, those dust, etc., are thin, so they do not obscure. Then, the object when near, should be able to be obscured by dust, etc., because the obscuring dust, etc., are thin, then the appearance to be obscured is also equally thin. If it is said: when far, there are many obscuring dust particles, so they obscure the appearance, but not when near. Then, the object that is far away, different from being near, should not be able to be obscured by the obscuring dust particles, because the obscuring dust, etc., are numerous, then the appearance to be obscured is not thin, but is very numerous. Furthermore, if because the object is near, the appearance is clear, and the object is seen clearly, then for an object that is very close, such as placing a vase against the eye, the object and the sense should become clear, because the appearance is very clear.
