Regarding the meaning of what is said as "discrimination," some earlier scholars said that refuting wrong views about number and object, it is unreasonable to apply it only to the first object. Because if that were the case, in the commentary it should also appear before the wrong view of characteristics, which is unreasonable. Moreover, it contradicts the earlier commentary of "free from conceptualization, is direct perception" in the chapter on direct perception, which says, "Thus, after eliminating the wrong view of number, eliminating the wrong view of essence." Some people think that dividing it into four sections according to the literal meaning, eliminating the wrong view of the object. It is also unreasonable to think that the following content of "Accumulations are groups" can explain it. Because the difference between using half of the root perception text to eliminate the wrong view of characteristics, and using the other half and the remaining three direct perception texts to eliminate the wrong view of the object, cannot be proved by anyone. Therefore, the gods' view is that eliminating the wrong view of the object is the commonality of the first two, so it is said in the third. In the case of number, it is determined that what is to be measured is two, and other numbers are prohibited; in terms of characteristics, in the case of root perception, it is forbidden that combinations, universals, and many opposites are the objects of root perception; in the case of mental perception, it is forbidden that the meaning taken by the immediately preceding cause root perception is the object of mental perception; in the case of self-awareness, it is forbidden that happiness and so on are material; in the case of yogic perception, it is forbidden that untrue meanings are the objects of yogic perception, etc. These are all to eliminate the wrong view of the object. However, in the Treatise on Logic, the texts in the case of determining the number of valid cognitions as two, considering that it is the common dharma of valid cognitions in general, it is best to explain it in the chapter on examining characteristics, so we will explain it according to that method. Second, it is divided into two: showing the general characteristics of the two valid cognitions; determining the direct perception of the subject matter of this chapter. First, it is divided into two: determining that there are two valid cognitions; refuting the wrong view of assuming other numbers. First, it is divided into three: establishing the proof that is determined to be two; establishing the three aspects of that proof; showing that the other numbers are eliminated by that aspect. The first is in brief: direct perception and inference.

Explaining the meaning of "The nature of valid cognition is its two objects of measurement." The valid cognition with characteristics mentioned earlier is, in terms of its mode of engagement, definitely twofold: direct perception and inference. This is because, in terms of the object of measurement of its mode of engagement, it is definitely numbered as two: the particular and the general. The second (inference) is twofold: establishing the subject-property and establishing pervasion. The first (establishing the subject-property) is twofold: stating the proof that is definitely twofold in terms of the object of measurement; explaining the nature of the established and the measured, both being twofold. The first is: If it is not established that it is definitely twofold in terms of the object of measurement, because there are also blue lotuses, etc., that are both particular and general. Then, the object of measurement of the mode of engagement of valid cognition is twofold, eliminating the three, because it is definitely numbered as two: capable of performing a function and incapable of performing a function. If the hair and double moon, etc., appearing to a mistaken sense consciousness become objects of measurement that are neither particular nor general, because they are incapable of performing a function, they are not particulars; because they appear clearly and have no following, they are not generals either. Then, the hair and double moon, etc., appearing to a mistaken sense consciousness are not the objects measured by that sense consciousness that appears to itself, because for the object measured by that sense consciousness that appears to itself, there is no inclination, i.e., no attachment, due to the certainty brought about by that sense consciousness. Therefore, the object of measurement of the mode of engagement of valid cognition is definitely numbered as two: the particular and the general, because it is definitely numbered as two: similar in place, time, and nature, i.e., common, and dissimilar, i.e., uncommon; because it is definitely numbered as two: the real object of sound and the non-real object; because, relying on causes other than the place, such as attention and designation, etc., when they exist, the mind is the appearing object of existence, and when designation, etc., exist but there is no meaning of the appearing object, it is the appearing object of the mind of non-existence. The second (the second part of the first, explaining the nature of the established and the measured, both being twofold) is threefold: showing that the object of measurement is twofold in terms of the mode of engagement; summarizing the object of measurement of the entering place as one particular; refuting the contradiction to the statement that it is twofold. The first (showing that the object of measurement is twofold in terms of the mode of engagement) is threefold: showing that the two aspects mentioned earlier are bases of designation; explaining whether the nature exists in things or not; showing the distinction of the nature of the general. The first (showing that the two aspects mentioned earlier are bases of designation) is twofold: the real base of designation; refuting the dispute. The first is: The designation of the two objects of measurement mentioned as "because it is two objects of measurement"
