Explaining the necessity. Third, explaining the necessity of praising with valid cognition, divided into two points: demonstrating that valid cognition is necessary, and the manner in which inference is established as valid cognition. The first point is: If the Bhagavan possesses immeasurable qualities, then what is the necessity of praising with valid cognition itself? Praising the object of such qualities that have become valid cognition is necessary, because it is only within the teachings of that Bhagavan that the system of valid cognition can be established, and not arbitrarily established by Dignāga, for the sake of understanding this reason. The second point is: Then, although manifest valid cognition is established as valid cognition in the scriptures, how is inference established as valid cognition? The teacher is valid cognition, because inference being valid cognition is undeniable, and sound, etc., being valid cognition is deniable. Not only undeniable, but also whatever slightly possesses the nature of arising is all cessation, that is, possessing the nature of destruction, and "from smoke, one knows fire," etc., because in various ways, the application of this inference is also seen to be taught. Universally, the sign whose characteristic is not arising when the probandum does not exist is the basis of inference, and the relationship of the sign not arising when the dharma does not exist is also clearly explained by the previous words, because the pervasion of the probandum impermanence, etc., to the reason arising, etc., is shown. Third is: In the commentary on the Pramāṇavārttika, the Rays of Samantabhadra, the explanation of the chapter on establishing valid cognition, that is, the explanation of the second chapter. Explaining the two remaining chapters that are timely. Explaining manifest valid cognition. The chapter on manifest valid cognition. Third, explaining the two remaining chapters that are timely, divided into two points: explaining manifest valid cognition, and explaining inference for others. The first point is divided into three points: First, showing the connection of the relationship; in the middle, explaining the text of the chapter itself; finally, showing the conclusion with the name. The first point, in the commentary of the gods: The reason for explaining the treatise on the characteristics of the teacher's valid cognition is the previously established inference, and the first verse of the treatise spoken by the teacher, that is, the latter half of the homage verse, because the latter half is easier to understand.

Having completely finished my own exposition, now, in order to expound the nature of valid cognition (pramāṇa), (this treatise) is composed beginning with "Because there are two objects of measurement," and so forth. This is the meaning of what is said. The Tibetan (view): Taking the collection of treatises on the nature of valid cognition as a general (object), because the reason for expounding it is self-benefit inference and the commentary on the homage of the collection, therefore the establishment of valid cognition has also been expounded. Now, in order to expound the nature of valid cognition, the chapter on direct perception will be taught. This view is self-contradictory. Because below the chapter on direct perception in this treatise, there is no commentary on the two chapters of the Sutra. Moreover, as the reason for expounding self-benefit inference, it would necessarily fall into the fault of expounding self-benefit inference. Therefore, the view of Deva (Svatantrasena) is: The teacher's treatise on the nature of valid cognition is the chapter on direct perception of the Sutra, so the reason for expounding it is self-benefit inference and the commentary on the homage of the Sutra. Therefore, the chapter on the establishment of valid cognition has already been expounded, and now the treatise on the nature of valid cognition, that is, the chapter on direct perception of the Sutra, will be expounded. Here it is said that the treatise on the nature of valid cognition will be expounded by way of eliminating the four types of wrong conceptions. Moreover, this is because the chapter on direct perception itself is sufficient to complete it. Why is the chapter on direct perception called the treatise on the nature of valid cognition? Because by showing the four, such as number, etc., one can realize the nature of valid cognition completely and truly. As it is said in the commentary: If it is said that showing number, etc., is meaningless in order to show the nature of valid cognition, that is not the case. Because that is the meaning of having a completely pure nature. Then, in the *Pramāṇavārttika*, why does the chapter on direct perception not expound self-benefit inference at the beginning? This should be asked of the commentator himself. I have already explained in the first chapter the way in which these faults do not exist by combining it with the chapter on the establishment of valid cognition. In the middle, the text of the chapter itself is explained. The second part has two aspects: marginal analysis and the meaning of the text. The first part is: In the commentary of Deva (Svatantrasena), four types of wrong conceptions are seen regarding valid cognition and its treatises on the nature. That is to say: wrong conception about number, wrong conception about nature, wrong conception about the object of experience, and wrong conception about the result.
