It is called wisdom. When it is not recognized, it is called the alaya consciousness. The recognition and non-recognition of it are called co-emergent wisdom and co-emergent ignorance. Which of these two comes first? There is no before or after in time. There is no good or bad in essence, because the essence of these two is the same. Thus it is said. Gyalwa Yang Gonpa said, regarding this, the meaning of the term Mahamudra is: Mahamudra is derived from the Sanskrit (Sanskrit Devanagari: saṃskṛti) word Mahāmudrā (Tibetan: མ་ཧཱ་མུ་དྲཱ།, Sanskrit: Mahāmudrā, Sanskrit Romanization: Mahāmudrā, literal Chinese meaning: great seal), which means non-transcendence, indivisibility, or non-emptiness. That is to say, all phenomena of samsara and nirvana, awakening from their own ground, without losing their original state or changing their color, do not transcend the co-emergent wisdom in the three times without time, hence it is a seal. Because there is nothing higher or different from it, it is "great." That is to say, if the consciousness of a moment is concentrated on one point, when a thought suddenly arises, without making any negation or affirmation of that thought, then that thought itself resides in the essence of co-emergent wisdom. Whether recognized or not, it will not transcend it, so it is a seal. Because wisdom or the intention of the Buddha cannot be found apart from thought, it is "great." Thus it is said. These are explanations of the meaning of the name Mahamudra and Co-emergent Union. Moreover, there is no contradiction in how Mahamudra, Great Madhyamaka, Great Perfection, etc., are named. Phagdru said: Because all thoughts and afflictions are subdued, it is subduing. Discrimination is the Dharmakaya, the place where firm knowledge arises. Because it cuts from within fabrications, this is the instruction of the guru. Because it is free from extremes such as permanence and annihilation, slander, etc., it is Madhyamaka. Because it is unspeakable, unthinkable, and inexpressible, it is the instruction of Prajnaparamita. The dharmas of samsara and nirvana are perfected in the mind, hence it is the Great Perfection. All good and bad thoughts, all without intention, hence it is the Great Seal. Because suffering is pacified, it is pacifier. Afflictions and thoughts, all transformed into the path, hence it is secret mantra. The mind, thoughts, and the three kayas, are initially co-emergent, because they are united by instruction, it is called Co-emergent Union. Ghosts and demons, in the middle

And also praised. Thus it was said. The sixty-sixth Dharma discourse. Fourth, the difference between Mahamudra and Sahajasambandha is: Dagpo Rinpoche, in response to a question to Phagmo Drupa, said: Are there differences between Mahamudra and Sahajasambandha? He replied: Mahamudra is all dharmas of samsara and nirvana, spontaneously accomplished from the beginning, like the dharmadhatu sky, it is a non-dual wisdom of all times. Sahajasambandha is the union of whatever thought arises with the four kayas, therefore it is not considered to be of all times, because it has interruptions. Also, Zhang Rinpoche said: Such a nature, cannot be seen with words and examination. Inferior ones strive on the gradual path, intermediate ones strive on the method of channels and winds, superior ones should meditate on Sahajasambandha and Mahamudra. Also, with the wisdom of Sahajasambandha, examine thoughts and transform them into Dharmakaya, the instruction of Mahamudra is, relax thoughts and transform them into Dharmakaya. And so on, endlessly said. In short, Mahamudra is taught through the four meanings, and all the meanings spoken of are contained therein. That is also as stated in the words of Götsangpa, Götsangpa said: What is called Mahamudra is: essence, definition, division, and difference, these four. Essence is that it pervades everything, everything is contained in its own nature, it is beyond the realm of thought and expression. Definition is: hand is emptiness, seal is liberation from the dharmas of samsara, great is the realization of union. Thus it is said. Divisions are of three types: the basis is the Mahamudra that pervades everything, the path is the Mahamudra that is practiced, the fruit is the Mahamudra that is spontaneously accomplished. Mahamudra has three characteristics: the essence is that nothing is established, the phenomena is that nothing is ceased, that itself exists without separation. There are also five differences: the view is the difference of realization arising from within without relying on scriptures and reasoning; the meditation is the difference of sinking and agitation naturally liberated without relying on mind-holding; the samaya is the difference of the unbroken continuation of uncontaminated vows without relying on guarding vows; the conduct is the difference of the knots of acceptance and rejection naturally liberated without relying on antidotes; the fruit is without relying on time and signs
