The method of guarding after obtaining (the precepts). Not only obtaining, but also the ten aspects manifested from any consistent cause, such as the place where it is obtained, Khenpo, etc.: the support body is complete, the ritual practice, the main practice, and the subsequent practice are complete, and there must be something that is free from obstacles such as the Dharma realm of conflicting conditions. There are five ways to guard after obtaining: relying on others, one's own intention is complete, recognizing incompatible things, through fully practicing the learning, and guarding by relying on the conditions of living in peace. The first of these is: staying in the place and praying, and the rules for cutting off sins, as it is said: It is happy to see the saints. And it is said: Good friends are extremely difficult to obtain. The second is: feeling ashamed of entering into sinful and unwholesome things on one's own side, and from the other side, in order to guard against being blamed by the gods and others in the world, not forgetting the mindfulness of the antidote, and the wisdom of immediately protecting, being cautious from many doors or accompanied by caution, accompanied by the wisdom of falling into the abyss in the direction of falling. The third is: whether it is the cause of abandoning the precepts, or the cause of harming the precepts that can achieve bodhi, or the cause of obstructing the samadhi of the extremely pure mind, it must be clearly identified and abandoned. The fourth is: reciting the precepts every half month, and purifying the continuum through retreat and so on. The fifth is: relying on clothes, thirty-six kinds of sins arising from clothes; relying on food, twenty-two kinds of sins arising from food; relying on utensils, three kinds of bowls, begging, needles, and knives; relying on dwellings and bedding, thirteen kinds of houses, big houses, etc., in a way that removes the fatigue of enjoying the two extremes. Third, the intention to restore after breaking the precepts is: wanting to restore the precepts after regretting, having the intention of Nirvana. The practice is: it arises from the ritual of confession. The second general meaning is: this sutra is the common and individual precepts, the meaning of the words is: it will be explained below, the connection is: raising the topic through restoration and distinction, etc. The debate answer is: each occasion.

Although some explain it this way, this sutra is mainly a treatise on practice, so there is not much debate. Second, regarding the meaning of the name: In Indian language, it is Prātimokṣa Sūtra (प्रतिमॊक्षसूत्र, prātimokṣasūtra, Individual Liberation Sutra), and in Tibetan, it is "Soso Tarpa Do" (སོ་སོར་ཐར་པའི་མདོ།, meaning "Individual Liberation Sutra"). Now, let's start explaining from the difficult points. Regarding individual liberation, there are two aspects: the meaning to be expressed and the words that express it. First, it is necessary to understand from what cause it arises. According to the Vaibhāṣika school, the arising of conditioned phenomena requires six causes, four conditions, and five results. As stated in the Abhidharmakośa: "The efficient cause and simultaneous cause, the similar cause and pervasive cause, the ripening cause and the six causes, should be known in order." Therefore, the vows of individual liberation do not arise from the ripening cause, because the cause of the arising of the vows of individual liberation does not possess the characteristics of ripening. Because the ripening cause is "The ripening cause is said to be non-virtuous, and virtuous with outflows, these two differences." And it is said to be realized after one lifetime. While the vows of individual liberation are virtuous. Nor will it arise from the pervasive cause, because the vows of individual liberation do not possess the characteristics of the pervasive cause. Its characteristic is: "The pervasive is called defiled nature." Moreover, the vows of individual liberation will not arise from the co-occurring cause, because it does not possess that characteristic. Its characteristic is: "Those with the same mental support." Therefore, since the Vaibhāṣika school considers the vows of individual liberation to be form, this statement is unreasonable. Here there are three causes: the similar cause refers to the later moment arising from the previous moment, being of the same kind as itself. The similar cause is similarity. The co-existent cause refers to the old four great elements in sets of seven producing new four great elements in sets of seven, like arrows and a quiver. It causes conditioned phenomena to possess four characteristics. It can also arise from the efficient cause. There are two types: the efficient cause is empty, merely not creating obstacles; and related to the efficient cause, there are also three types. The first is: the basis that causes the vows of individual liberation to arise in the continuum, that is, the continuous existence from the second moment onwards, with the four great elements as the cause. The second is: the state cause that is interrupted by many moments when the vows of individual liberation arise; and the state of the previous moment when the later moment arises is the intention of time, that is, the mind.
