Thus it is established. Therefore, it is refuted by the reasoning accepted by others. Reasoning, as it is called, refers to some of the validities known in the world, which are adopted in the treatises of various philosophical schools, and by which they commonly engage in refutation and establishment, and acceptance and rejection. If these are accepted, the tenets of the inner and outer logicians will contradict their own commitments, and it is impossible not to be harmed by the reasoning of others. Because the views of the inner and outer philosophical schools are like dreams, illusions, cities of gandharvas, images, hairs seen by those with dizziness, and so on, and like rabbit horns, which are considered to be real, and are considered to be permanent and impermanent, material and immaterial, one and different, self and other, both, and arising without cause, and so on, and they acknowledge that they possess functions such as arising and ceasing, coming and going, and so on. They think that their own view has merits, so they want to establish it; they think that the views of others have faults, so they want to refute them, and thus initiate refutation and establishment. However, they do not see the endless internal contradictions and harms of reasoning in their own views; but they can see all the internal contradictions, common harms of reasoning, and contradictions with worldly common sense in the views of others. This is the nature of all those who hold to philosophical schools, so they engage in mutual refutation and establishment, and victory and defeat are uncertain. Just as a wise person who understands the nature of illusions and so on does not see any basis for the differences of illusions and so on, so it is not appropriate to analyze their characteristics. Similarly, the Madhyamika recognizes all the errors of the logicians who analyze the characteristics of the non-differentiated basis. When they point out the internal contradictions of each and every one, and the harms of common reasoning and common sense, those people will see that all their own positions are internally contradictory, and are harmed by reasoning and common sense. In order to eliminate attachment to their own views, they will not develop respect for the Madhyamika, thinking that they have not seen the reason for establishment. However, when they see that all the positions of those who hold to philosophical schools are internally contradictory, and when attachment to these positions disappears, they will turn to the Madhyamika, which is free from all philosophical schools.
