Nor is it appropriation. I am not without appropriation. Nor is it certain to be non-existent. (End) Therefore, where the agent (291a) is not seen, but karma exists and the ripening also exists, it is said that this should be understood as negating the true agent. Other agents who are established based on mere common parlance and become branches of terminology are not negated, as it is said: This person who is associated with ignorance also manifestly accumulates merit. It is widely said as such. Third, because the capable one said that the self is earth, water, fire, wind, and consciousness, and called space, the six elements and the six bases of contact such as the eye, relying on the six supports, and holding on to the mind and mental phenomena, therefore, he said that it is not those things, it is not their nature, it is only an accumulation, therefore, it is unreasonable to have self-grasping towards them. Because the capable one said in the sutra: Great King, the person is the six elements, the six sources of contact, and the eighteen mental activities. Thus, the self is earth, water, fire, wind, and consciousness, and called space, the six elements and the six supports of contact from the eye to the mind, relying on the six supports, that is, on the six objects such as form, the six near causes of pleasant feeling, the six near causes of unpleasant feeling, and the six near causes of equanimity, a total of eighteen, holding on to the mind and mental phenomena, it is established as self, as it is definitely declared. Therefore, that self is not the same as those dharmas, nor is it merely an accumulation of them, because those dharmas cannot be the self, therefore, it is unreasonable to have a mind of self-grasping towards those dharmas. Therefore, since the yogi does not see an object of self-grasping outside of the aggregates, knowing that the self and what belongs to the self do not exist, cutting off the continuum of the five aggregates, and becoming nirvana without appropriation, therefore, the investigation of no-self (291b) is very beautiful. Second, divided into two: it is not appropriate to take unrelated things as what should be abandoned and taken, and to eliminate this by way of analogy. First: When realizing no-self, abandoning the permanent self, this is not desired as the basis of self-grasping, therefore.

To say that the view of self is eradicated by the wisdom of no-self is truly wonderful! Holding the aggregates as one, and later, upon attaining the path of seeing, claiming to have abandoned the object-possessor but not the object, and asserting to have abandoned the non-object, the self of the tirthikas, the Multitudinous, according to their tenets, as long as the aggregates continue uninterrupted, the clinging to self will persist, because the basis of the clinging to self has not been averted, since the aggregates themselves are the self. Thus it is said that when a yogi realizes no-self, by knowing the no-self of a permanent self that is other than the aggregates, to say that the seed of viewing the aggregates as the object-possessor self is completely eradicated is truly wonderful, because they are mutually unrelated. Even if you abandon the permanent self that is imputed as other than the aggregates, and the world deems it non-existent, this permanent self that is other than the aggregates is not even considered by worldly people as the basis of their clinging to self, therefore they cannot avert the view of self towards the aggregates, which has become the basis of their clinging to self. The meaning of this is that for the aggregates, all sentient beings innately view them as self with the clinging to self, and when a proponent of a tenet asserts a self on the object of the innate view of self, affixing attributes such as conditioned or unconditioned, permanent or impermanent, when asked where the self, which is the object of the innate clinging to self and the imputed, exists if it is real, whether in conditioned or unconditioned, permanent or impermanent things, when the imputed self is refuted, the innate (292a) self is not refuted either. Because if the innate self were real, it would have to exist in permanent or impermanent things, or in conditioned or unconditioned things, but when the imputed self cannot be established by such analysis, the self that is the object of the innate view of self is equally unable to be established as a real entity. Just as when the imputed four extremes of arising and ceasing are refuted in sprouts etc., the innate arising and ceasing are also refuted, yet here, the Multitudinous make a mistake in their assertion and must implicitly acknowledge a self other than the aggregates as the innate self, and thus, according to your system, the innate self and the view of self that are known to all sentient beings cannot be abandoned, this is a criticism. This is also the Multitudinous.
