Saying: In all places including Ngari (Western Tibet), all the black horses, riding horses, wearing cloaks, holding musical instruments, go and seek food, Emaho! Secondly, refuting the view that aggregates are self, and incidentally refuting the view that form is self, there are two points. First, aggregates are not substances, therefore they cannot be protectors, etc. Refuting the defense against this, there are three points. The first is: When it is said that the skandhas are "I", it is the collection of skandhas, not the essence of the skandhas. For example, when it is said that "trees are a forest", the collection of trees is a forest, not the essence of trees. If it were the essence of trees, then each tree would become a forest. Similarly, when it is said that "the skandhas are I", it is the collection of skandhas that is called "I", not the essence of the skandhas that is called "I". If it were the essence of the skandhas, then each skandha would become "I". The second is: Not a protector, nor a tamer or a witness. Because without it, it is not an aggregate. Aggregates cannot be protectors, etc., because they are not substances, so they are nothing. The Blessed One said: "Self is one's own protector, self is also one's own enemy. (290n) Having done good and bad deeds, self is one's own witness." Therefore, self is said to be a protector and a witness. It is also said: "Having tamed oneself well, the wise will attain high status." If it is said that self can be tamed, then merely an aggregate, without substance, is not a protector, nor a tamer or a witness, because without this aggregate, therefore the aggregate is not self. Third, example, divided into two points of meaning. The first is: At that time, its various parts, the places of assembly, will all become a chariot, the chariot and I are similar. If one thinks that there is no difference between the aggregate and the aggregated, so protectors, etc., are established in the aggregated, that is not correct. Because it is not appropriate to say one and I for the various different dharmas, it has been said before. If those who say that the skandhas are I, think that the various different aggregates are I, then when it is said "the various parts of the chariot", the screws and other parts of the chariot, the various parts existing in the aggregate, will all become a chariot, that is also unreasonable. Because it will be refuted below that the various parts are the chariot. Therefore, the chariot and I are similar, so the various parts of the aggregate of skandhas are I.

How else would it change? Therefore, the sutra says: 'The word "I" is the mind of a demon, you have become a view. This conditioned aggregate is empty, there are no sentient beings in it. Just as relying on the collection of limbs, it is called a chariot. Likewise, relying on the aggregates, it is conventionally called a sentient being.' Thus it is said. Secondly, the sutra says that it exists by relying on the aggregates. Therefore, the mere collection of aggregates is not self. The mere collection of aggregates is not self, because the sutra says that relying on the aggregates, it is nominally established as self, mine, sentient being, and person (Tibetan: གང་ཟག). Secondly, if it is said to be shape, that is because it exists in tangible things. You think those are the self. The collection of mind and so on is not the self, because they have no shape. Also, the collection of wheels and so on is not a chariot, but when the wheels and so on have a difference in shape, then the name of the chariot can be obtained. Similarly, the collection of form and so on is not self, but if it is said that the shape of the arrangement of form and so on is self, that is not correct. Because shape exists in tangible things, and you think that those tangible things are the self. If that is the case, the nature of the collection of the four names of mind and so on is not the self, because they have no shape. Thirdly, refuting substance and action without an agent. First, the taker and the taken are not the same substance. If that were the case, the action and the agent would become the same. The substance of the taker, the self, and the aggregates to be taken should not be the same, if that were the case, the action and the agent would become the same, therefore the form, pot, and potter caused by the four great elements would also become the same. The treatise says: 'If the wood is the fire, the agent and the action will become the same.' Thus it is said. Secondly, if it is thought that there is action without an agent, that is not correct, because without an agent there is no action. If it is thought that there is no taker at all, but only the action to be taken, that is, the collection of form and other proximate aggregates, that is not correct. Because if there is no agent as a cause, there will be no action. The treatise says: 'Therefore, taking and action are not different entities.'
