Thus it was said. When giving experiential instructions on this Dharma tradition of Mahamudra, empowerments of Secret Mantra are not performed. Rather, considering that this Mahamudra directly reveals the Madhyamaka of emptiness, free from elaboration, of the Sutra system, and implicitly reveals the ultimate Sugata-garbha, both common and uncommon, of Sutra and Tantra (7b), thus, Lord Gampopa, the glorious Phagmo Drupa, the protector of the three worlds, Drikungpa, and others said: 'This text of our Mahamudra is the treatise Mahayana Uttaratantra Shastra composed by the Bhagavan Maitreya.' Thus it was said. Considering this meaning, the great Gyalwa Godtsangpa, father and son, also said: 'The leaders of this Dharma of Mahamudra are the great Brahmin and Nagarjuna. The great Brahmin taught from the aspect of accomplishing Mahamudra, and the Lord Nagarjuna taught from the aspect of refuting.' Thus it was said. Therefore, in the Dharma source of Gyalwa Garwang, the fourth Shamarpa's tutor, the great translator Zhonnu Pal, it is said: 'This tradition known as the Phagdru Kagyu is not a lineage of words, but a lineage of meaning. The meaning is the lineage of realizing the stainless Mahamudra. Whichever lama from whom one obtains the realization of Mahamudra, that lama is regarded as the root lama.' Although I rejoice in the words spoken with impartiality, this person divides Mahamudra into abiding Mahamudra and bliss-emptiness Mahamudra, considering them to be the respective views of Sutra and Tantra. And he writes that the latter Mahamudra is better than the former, which is the view of the Kagyu Rinpoche, which is very unreasonable and has already been refuted elsewhere. Therefore, these lineage holders, according to the Tantric system, do not have separate teachings of Mahamudra other than the Six Dharmas, but considering the aspect of meaning, they make the Six Dharmas and Mahamudra as separate teachings (8a). This Dharma tradition has not only spread in this precious lineage in the land of snow (Tibet), but also many propagators have appeared. The venerable Dharma transmitted from India, known as the excellent Dharma that pacifies suffering, appeared in three periods: early, middle, and late. In particular, the great accomplished Mitra Jogi, and the great Indian scholars and accomplished ones such as Panchen Shakya Shri, were very numerous, and they were all great Bodhisattvas.

The Mahamudra taught to Po Khrolo also appears in this Dharma tradition. Later, when Panchen Nag Rinchen came to Tibet, a portion of the Mahamudra taught to Lotsawa Jampa Lingpa, Lotsawa Zhonnu Pal, and Khrichen Lotsawa, etc., is also present in this Dharma tradition. Thus, when the single meaning of the Dharma is expressed in the same way by different individuals, the Sakya, Gelug, and Bodong schools claim that the view and practice of Mahamudra unique to the Kagyu Rinpoche is the view and practice of Hwashang. Why do other noble beings not say the same? To this, some say that the activity of the Kagyu Rinpoche is merely transmitted, and since it did not occur in other schools, they did not say it. Therefore, one must be a person who relies on the four reliances, relying on the Dharma and not on individuals, as the Buddha himself said, but due to the influence of hatred, they act contrary to it. Therefore, the transmission lineage of this Dharma is similar from Lord Gampopa to Dus Khyen. The second transmission lineage is: from the master Nagarjuna, Aryadeva, Chandrakirti, the great and small Cuckoos of Intelligence, etc., to Jowo Atisha, the virtuous friend Dromtönpa, his son Chennga-wa, and Jawelpa, etc., Lord Gampopa heard from many Kadampa (8b) lamas. Or, from Putowa to the great ascetic Sharawa, then to the glorious Dusum Khyenpa, and so on. Now, are the teachings of Madhyamaka called Mahamudra transmitted from Jetsun Maitripa, and the teachings of Madhyamaka transmitted from Jowo, the same in their Dharma tradition? Although there is no difference in meaning, here it is ascertained through the means of reasoning and contemplation, and one abides with the wisdom that gains a slight clarity in the aspect of negating non-existence. There, just as fire ceases when fuel is exhausted, the wisdom of reasoning and contemplation itself is ascertained from the groundless and rootless perspective, and the difference lies in abiding in a state where neither negation nor affirmation has any meaning. When Lord Gampopa, who had perfected the view and practice of Shamatha-Vipassana of the Kadampa school's Madhyamaka, came to Lord Milarepa and offered his realization, (Milarepa said) in terms of Shamatha, although all of that is good, it does not transcend the cause of the higher realms. In terms of Vipassana, there is a danger that all of that will fall into the four pitfalls of emptiness. However,
