Some argue that Buddhapālita's method of refuting self-origination is unreasonable because, in the absence of self-origination, establishing meaninglessness, etc., is either a Svātantrika argument or a Prasangika argument. If it is the former, it is extremely unreasonable because there is a probandum as a reason, and because an example illustrating pervasion, such as 'like having consciousness,' is not stated. If the fault stated by others, that the effect exists in its own nature and does not arise, is established by Buddhapālita, then it becomes establishing what is already established, because the Samkhyas also do not accept that an existing effect arises, and because arising from the nature of a cause is meaningless. If so, it becomes a contradictory reason because all arising has a cause, and because the fault of the commitment and the reason are not clear. (103b) If it is the latter, Prasangika, because it is a word that becomes a consequence, it is reversed from the meaning of the occasion, so what is to be established and its property, the meaning of the reversed reason, these will become manifest, because things will arise from others, and arising will become a state of having effects, and arising will become a state of having an end. In that case, the three established tenets of the Madhyamikas are not accepted, so it will contradict the tenets, thus criticizing. So it is said. In this regard, ancient writings say that since Jñānagarbha and others must be universally contradictory to refutation, if self-origination is refuted, then other-origination must be accepted, because this Prasangika dilemma exists in all tenets, so they boast. When the great Prasangika master Jo-bo Hasumati came to Tibet, the Tibetan teachers asked: Is the Madhyamika school itself the best tenet? He replied: Tenet refers to view. All views are to be abandoned, so for the Madhyamikas, although they do not want the Prasangika dilemma, they are labeled with the bad name of a good tenet merely because they do not accept something like a disease that pervades all tenets that are confused. So it seems. Thus, for the Prasangika arguments established by Jñānagarbha and others, in terms of acknowledging the opposite meaning, there seems to be a way of imposing Svātantrika on it. However, for the Prasangika arguments stated by masters like Buddhapālita to refute, since it is unrelated to the intention of stating its opposite meaning, even if it is reversed, it is reversed.

It is not possible, just as throwing a weapon outwards from the sky, after severing the life-sustaining point of a person, that person in turn counters with a weapon that cuts the sky, but is unable to cut the sky. Lekden (legs ldan) refuted without fundamentally understanding the intention of the Venerable Buddhapālita. That teacher argued that it should not arise from self, because it would become meaningless and absurd, which seems to be merely an attack on the Samkhya school. But the teacher Sangharakshita did as the reason stated there, by throwing out the unwanted inference, and then re-accepting other reasons as arguments, thereby refuting the Samkhya school. So, in general, refuting the commitment of a reductio ad absurdum argument triggers a svatantrika reason, and refuting the reason of a reductio ad absurdum argument triggers a svatantrika commitment, which is the rule of epistemology. Why is it that the teacher Lekden here refutes the reason of a reductio ad absurdum argument, thereby triggering a svatantrika reason, and refutes the commitment of a reductio ad absurdum argument, thereby triggering a svatantrika commitment? Although it is true, it is said that this kind of refutation is the argumentative style of early epistemologists. Some later Tibetans say that people like the teacher Lekden refute without understanding the intention of Sangharakshita, which is very unreasonable. It is said that for such a great scholar, in the darkness before dawn, the sun of refutation cannot rise. Some impartial Bodhisattvas say that he refuted without understanding his intention, which is well known in early literature. If in that early era, this tradition of teaching and practice of the Dharma appeared in the scriptures of incarnate translators without interruption, it is incorrect. Then in this later era, all the traditions of teaching and practice have been interrupted, and with the wisdom of what each can do by referring to their respective texts, the teacher Lekden understood the intention of the teacher Sangharakshita and refuted it, saying that I understood it, what drove his heart? Third, the way in which one's own system establishes valid cognition, does not establish svatantrika, and therefore there is no fault of not stating examples and reasons. The meaning of refutation is to trigger svatantrika.
