To say that would be too extreme. In particular, how is the unborn nature realized from valid cognition or non-valid cognition in the Clear Words? When he raised this doubt and debated it, the answer is: How should it be said? If there were something called "certainty" for us, (98b) then it would either arise from valid cognition or arise from non-valid cognition, but in reality, it is not. Why? Because if there is uncertainty, then it needs to rely on it and become its antidote. When at some point we do not have uncertainty itself, then how could there be certainty that contradicts it? Because it does not depend on other related things, just like the length of a donkey's horn. When there is no such certainty, for what purpose are valid cognitions fully realized? This is what the scripture says. Then, if that valid cognition of proof is not established in one's own system, how can one perceive the unborn self? To this doubt, the scripture says: This speech of certainty exists for the world from the perspective of reasons established in oneself, but not for the noble ones. Do the noble ones not have reasoning? Who said there is or isn't? The ultimate truth for the noble ones is that they don't say anything, therefore, how could those who do not possess reason and non-reason have elaboration? That's how it is. So, when the noble ones are seeking that very truth, if they do not establish the profound truth through the reasoning of conventional phenomena and terminology established by valid cognition, then by what means do they comprehend it? Although the noble ones do not speak of the reasons for establishing that very truth through worldly conventional valid cognition, they accept the worldly conventional fame as it is spoken by worldly people, and thus comprehend that very truth. As it is said in the scripture: If the noble ones do not speak of reasons, (99a) then how do worldly people comprehend the ultimate truth? The noble ones do not speak of the reasons of worldly terminology, but in order to make others understand, they accept whatever reasons are widely known only in the world, and by that very means, they make the world comprehend the truth.

The words clearly indicate that the conventional real phenomena, whether by reason or terminology, etc., are not established in their own system by any valid means. However, the realists extensively establish their own system in this way. Is it that the great Tsongkhapa master and his followers did not understand the extensive explanation of the unreasonableness of this? Or is it that the explanation about this is not the teaching of the noble Chandrakirti? Just as a king does not listen to the words of a servant, what is the reason for discarding the meaning of the explanation like garbage? One should think about it carefully. In particular, the Svatantrika says that the dharma, etc., is established from the way of dwelling in the place, and that it is the meaning obtained by the valid means that is not mistaken in this way. If this is the case, then the great scholar Shantarakshita, who first created the great tradition of Svatantrika, would not say so even in a dream. To say that he said so, but to slander him greatly without any basis, what is the need for this? Is it not shameful to slander the noble ones? Therefore, if the real phenomena of the mundane convention are self-characterized, then in the 'Flame of Reasoning' it says: Convention is merely imputed (99b), it exists only as a thing. As the Sugata said: The three realms are only imputed, they do not exist as the nature of things. Evil discriminators on the imputed, falsely conceive as real objects. How should this passage be explained? If things are established by their own characteristics, then does the basis need to be established by the nature of the characteristics? If not, then things will not be established by their own characteristics from the self-aspect of the object. If so, then there, it is said: Birth, etc., are of a conditioned nature, the characteristic is not the basis, because it is conditioned, it should be known, different from that nature. It means that birth, etc., are the characteristics of the conditioned, so they should not be the characteristics of the basis of the aggregates, etc., because they are conditioned, and because they are to be known, the characteristics of birth, etc., are different from that basis. One should think like this. And again, there it says: Whatever is the nature of things, only exists, because it has characteristics. And so on.
