Furthermore, how could it not be in accordance with reality? Because it is the same as your statement. Moreover, if even ordinary beings, when examining all phenomena, say that there is no phenomenon that cannot be examined, then how can all that has not obtained the power of wisdom to examine be established as the nature of inconceivable phenomena? Even so, it is not a denial to establish as inconceivable phenomena and the nature of phenomena what has not been realized by those of weak intellect. Secondly, in that ground, the perfection of generosity is particularly shown, and incidentally, the praise of generosity is explained, and the difference between mundane and supramundane generosity is shown. First, the main point; and thereby also indicates other qualities. The first is: At that time, the cause of complete enlightenment is in him, the first generosity itself becomes especially increased. At the time of obtaining the first ground, among the ten perfections that the bodhisattva has as the cause of complete enlightenment, the first perfection of generosity becomes even more increased, because that perfection is the first cause of omniscience. It is not that there are no others such as discipline. The second is: Even giving one's own flesh is done with respect, it also becomes the cause of measuring the non-manifest. At that time, what need is there to mention ordinary things for that bodhisattva? Even cutting off one's own flesh and giving it to beggars is done with respect, this action becomes the cause of measuring the nature and qualities of the non-manifest first ground, because if great compassion that directly realizes the selflessness of self and others is not born in the mind, one will not respectfully give one's own flesh, this is holding the one who has attained the ground as the subject, and with pervasion. Otherwise, the sign and pervasion will not be established, because even ordinary bodhisattvas respectfully give their own flesh. Secondly, the reasons why the Buddhas first spoke of generosity; even if the giver and the manner are not in agreement, generosity can generate temporary and ultimate happiness; it can quickly generate happiness for the Buddha's children; summarizing these meanings; and explaining in detail how to generate happiness for the Buddha's children, there are five points. The first is: All these beings manifestly desire happiness, and the happiness of people is not without enjoyment, knowing that enjoyment also arises from generosity, the capable one first spoke the words of generosity.

Cutting off flesh and blood to give alms is the primary cause of becoming a Buddha, just as giving can be a sign of enlightenment for those who have not attained it. (54a) The almsgiving of ordinary beings can cure the suffering of hunger and so on, bringing happiness in samsara; the almsgiving of hearers and solitary realizers can cure the suffering of birth and so on, becoming the cause of attaining the bodhi of hearers and solitary realizers, as shown below: All ordinary beings below the third dhyana desire the happiness of samsara, which is of the nature of suffering, and the feeling of happiness of people below the third dhyana only arises when they have the enjoyment of food, clothing, etc., which are the cause of their own causes of suffering, and does not arise if they do not. And enjoyment also arises from giving, and if you do not give, it will not arise. The Buddha knew this, so when he preached the precepts and other teachings, he first preached the words of giving. Here, the word "people" is added to all those who desire the happiness of samsara, not to include the gods of the form realm, etc., among human beings, but here the word "people" is a summary of the words for people and gods, etc., who desire the feeling of happiness. Second, it is the cause of temporary and ultimate happiness. The first is: Those who are stingy and extremely rude, who are wholeheartedly concerned only with themselves, their desired enjoyments also come from giving, and become the cause of pacifying suffering. Givers are contrary to the way of acting for the benefit of others, and their compassion for others to be free from suffering is insufficient, and when they give, they have extremely rude thoughts, just as a merchant sells a small amount of goods in order to obtain a huge profit, thinking that if they give alms in this life, they will receive enjoyment in the next life, and are completely concerned only with themselves. They are contrary to the saints who do not seek the fruits of giving, but are happy to give alms widely, and it is because of this practice that (54b) they can obtain the desired result, namely, the enjoyment of their desires, and pacify the suffering of hunger and so on. And the reason for this is that they regard giving as a virtue and not giving as a fault. The second is: This also, by the occasion of giving, when will it be possible to quickly meet with the noble ones.
