Is it possible to refute without contact? Or, if there is contact, then the same fault of (self-contradiction) also applies to one's own words, because it has already been said that this is the same refutation. Regarding this fault, to what is refuted, saying that the nature of refutation is already established, there must be a bias in order to change. For me, a Madhyamika, this bias of the nature of refutation being established from the beginning does not exist, so it is impossible for the same fault of (self-contradiction) to apply to one's own words, because I do not consider refuting from any aspect of contact or non-contact. The sutra says: Venerable Subhuti, does one obtain the unarisen attainment by means of the arisen dharma? Or, does one obtain the unarisen attainment by means of the unarisen dharma? Subhuti said: Venerable Shariputra, I do not consider that one obtains the unarisen attainment by means of the arisen dharma, nor do I consider that one obtains the unarisen attainment by means of the unarisen dharma. Shariputra said: Venerable Subhuti, then is there no attainment and no realization? Subhuti said: (310a) Venerable Shariputra, there is attainment, and there is realization, but not in the manner of two. Venerable Shariputra, attainment and realization are spoken of in worldly convention, and stream-enterer, once-returner, non-returner, Arhat, Pratyekabuddha, and Bodhisattva are also spoken of in worldly convention, but in ultimate truth, there is no attainment and no realization. As it is extensively said, the arisen and unarisen dharmas, attainment and non-attainment, are all negated in the two truths. Without investigation, it appears as real, and without investigation, it merely appears as pleasing. The deceptive dharma that cannot be established by valid reasoning and the valid wisdom of the noble ones is merely a false appearance. This is merely in accordance with saying "attainment" in worldly convention. No matter from which aspect of contact or non-contact one refutes, the refutation cannot be established. Even without investigation, in worldly convention, the refuter is established in dependence on the object to be refuted. One should understand it like an emanation refuting an emanation, a magician refuting a magic trick, speaking of reason refuting unreason in a dream, and appearance refuting darkness. And,

Some who do not understand this profound Middle Way view, they think that the false deception arising from the influence of karma and afflictions, like the two moons seen by a dazzled eye, the objects of eye consciousness, such as vases, etc., are proven by mundane standards, and therefore are true. To cling to this truth (310b) is not clinging to truth, but correctly viewing the Middle Way. Clinging to truth means that if there is something that is not true, substantially existent, and knowable, like a rabbit's horn, then clinging to it is clinging to truth. If this is said, then ordinary people who have not joined any sect will also realize the Middle Way view, and it will be impossible for them to generate innate clinging to reality. Because ordinary people do not think that the negated objects such as vases exist in their own way. Because they are only attached to the things that appear in their minds as true and existent. Here it is said: If the object of negation as a reason, the self is truly knowable, then therefore, the self is truly appearing, and even the conventional together with clinging to it is not true. Therefore, the self-truth of the object of negation as a reason, even among ordinary people, cannot exist. If this is thought, then all ordinary people will effortlessly realize the Middle Way view. Because ordinary people do not think that the object of negation as a reason, besides the false conventional, there is a true conventional. Even if the false conventional is not negated by reason, how can the innate wisdom of ordinary people think that the false conventional is true? If the object negated by reason is self-truth, conventional truth, and is substantially existent, then therefore, the object of negation of reason and the path, both are the same basis, and not other than that. If reason does not negate (311a) the truth of the conventional as substantially existent, then therefore, the object negated by the path will also not be reason and the standard of cognition think that the truth of the conventional is not an object of negation, because reason thinks that it needs to be proven. The truth of the path arising from meditation will also become the truth of the conventional that needs to be proven. If this is thought, then for the noble ones, besides merely the conventional, no truth of the conventional is observed at all, therefore it is impossible to generate clinging to the truth of the conventional.
