Many [teachers] prevent arising, etc., in both truths, thereby causing them to fall away from abiding in the Madhyamaka that is beyond words and thoughts, and to enter again into the school that asserts reality, because they initially strive to establish the arising of the conventional as reasonable. In reality, if a certain mind with an apprehension that views arising and ceasing as characteristics and real entities imputes, then there is no difference between what is done by the arising and ceasing of the four extremes of imputation and what is done by the arising and ceasing of dependent origination, just as when binding, there is no difference in the binding between a gold rope and an iron rope. Moreover, if one examines and strives to establish the arising and ceasing of dependent origination, then under the authority of which arising and ceasing is that arising and ceasing, the ultimate truth or the conventional truth? If it is the former, it is not reasonable, because who can establish that in the ultimate truth there is separation from arising and ceasing? If it is the latter, it is also not reasonable, because the Madhyamikas do not examine the arising and ceasing of the conventional truth, but only imitate the statements of the world; if they establish it after examination, then the arising, etc., of the conventional truth (264a) will not be the object of negation of the sign, but will become the object to be established. In that case, if the Madhyamikas examine, then it will also become meaningless to negate the respective entities and natures of the arising, etc., of the conventional truth, and if they establish arising and ceasing after examination, then arising and ceasing will become able to withstand examination. If one wants such a dependent arising and ceasing that is able to withstand examination, then unless one accepts such a dharma aggregate that is neither the two truths but a third truth, such a dharma established by examination is impossible in both truths, so who can establish it in that way? One must think well. In terms of the meaning of words, when the Madhyamikas establish the arising and ceasing of the cause and effect of dependent origination without examination, because they have not imputed to the merely appearing worldly conventional truth, they do not fall away from the nature of the conventional truth when making assertions of terminology, because they speak of the meaning as it appears, without adding or subtracting. Even so, if one examines and establishes the arising and ceasing of dependent origination, etc., then because one has imputed to both truths, one falls away from the nature of both truths when entering into the ultimate meaning, because in the face of examination, the real phenomena of dependent origination and conventionality are established as not being established.

and clinging to it. Because they assume it has been established, it will obstruct the ultimate truth that is free from arising and ceasing, and therefore it will also become a slander of the ultimate truth. Therefore, some people in the snowy land (referring to Tibet) say that the Prasangika Madhyamaka school establishes the arising and ceasing of dependent origination according to its own system of reasoning, which is a unique characteristic, because the unreal, illusory arising and ceasing have been well established, and it is praised for the purpose of eliminating the extreme of annihilation. This statement simply has no flavor of Madhyamaka. The so-called "unreal, illusory arising and ceasing" appears from the teachings of the teachers who speak of being free from extremes, which, from the perspective of observation and the vision of the noble ones, is a teaching that establishes the arising and ceasing of dependent origination as being free from arising and ceasing, just like the arising and ceasing of illusion. There, to say that there is a teaching that establishes the existence of true arising and ceasing is impossible to dream of even in a dream. Therefore, those who speak in this way are truly pitiful! Therefore, without investigation, merely establishing in this way contradicts the substantialist clinging that believes in the arising of the four extremes, so the way the Madhyamaka school establishes the two truths is far superior to the way the substantialist school establishes the two truths, because for all knowable things of all beings such as Buddhas and sentient beings, it does not contradict the statements that are praised in the world. This is just this much. In the song of my great father Repa, it says: "The distinctions of the two truths that are established in relation, I also only speak from the perspective of what is commonly known in the world. Now, if we are free from the elaboration of the world, in relation to the truth and falsehood of phenomena, etc., for all the characteristics of arising and ceasing, all affirmations and negations of existence and non-existence, right and wrong, in that state of no object of focus and pacification, how can there be the view and practice of our own system? Once the tenets of our own system disappear, because there is no need to refute the tenets of others, do not even establish a name for Madhyamaka." Remembering the unreturnable kindness of what he said, I prostrate with all things. Therefore, merely with this kind of dependent origination, all views of causelessness can be eliminated, because causelessness is not dependent on anything, while dependent origination has the meaning of dependence. If it is said that Ishvara and others are born from a permanent, single, non-harmonious, and different cause, then it becomes dependent.
