Those, though similar in name, are not similar in meaning. Because their dependent arising is established and posited as the nature of things. But here, since it is not established by its own nature, and any dharma that is established in either things or non-things is not even established in name, therefore, in name, the aspect of the dharma of dependent arising, as it is proclaimed, will inevitably appear in the face of the world without being destroyed. By establishing the conventional dharma of dependent arising, it serves as a basis for easily entering the ultimate truth, the emptiness of causality and own-being, namely: the agent and the action; the self and the appropriation; the cause and the effect; the goer and the gone; the seen and the seer; the spoken and the speaker; the limb and the possessor of limbs; the part and the possessor of parts; the quality and the possessor of qualities; the substrate and the characteristic; the defining characteristic and the defined characteristic; the apprehended and the apprehender; the knowable and the knower; the valid cognition and the object to be measured; the to-be-established (262b) and the establisher; the to-be-abandoned and the antidote; the contaminated and the uncontaminated; the transcendent and the non-transcendent; the thing and the non-thing; the permanent and the impermanent; the conditioned and the unconditioned; the consciousness and the wisdom; the false and the true; the subject and the property; the conventional and the ultimate; samsara and nirvana, and so on. In short, all dharmas included in the two dharmas are established in dependence on each other, and apart from that, nothing is established independently by its own nature, therefore one will be liberated from the extremes of annihilation and permanence. Such dependent arising, cause and condition, arising and ceasing, one and different, etc., are reasonable in this way. If one separately establishes them according to one's own system, then that is an outsider to the Buddha's teaching. As it is said in the treatise: Those who, regarding the self and all things, as being together with it and different from it, do not think that they are wise about the meaning of what the Teacher taught. So it is said. To regard those things as one and different is only the thought of children, not of the noble ones. As it is said in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning: Not seeing that nature, one imagines samsara and nirvana; seeing that nature, one does not imagine samsara and nirvana. So it is said. Therefore, this which is called "merely this condition".

In the world, whatever dharma is known as the cause of a certain fruit, that is its cause. It shows that it is free from causes established by others, such as the invisible lord and the alaya-vijnana. When the Madhyamaka school does not (263a) examine, when establishing conventional truth in front of others in the world, merely saying that its arising and ceasing, cause and effect, are only worldly accepted assumptions, this will completely harm the four extremes of arising. By harming it, it can also prevent the view of establishing the arising and ceasing of truly existing things. Moreover, in order to be consistent with the reasoning that establishes all dharmas as unborn, the establishment of dependent origination and interdependent arising and ceasing is also highly praised. Because if it is such dependent origination, then the pervasiveness of establishing emptiness also resides in the reasonable acceptance of conventional truth that is accepted by others in the world. But this is not the case for the Madhyamaka school's own system, because the Madhyamaka school itself, when examining the worldly conventional truth of dependent origination, cannot find a reason to reasonably establish it. Therefore, using the reason of interdependent arising and ceasing that is accepted by others to prevent the four extremes of arising and ceasing that others accept is already established in words. Although there are cases like using arising and ceasing themselves to prevent arising and ceasing, there is no error in meaning, because this is the occasion of saying that it is born from conditions, so it is not born. Because one should rely on meaning, not rely on words. That which is born from conditions is unborn, this is what the supreme wise one said. So, with the reason of dependent origination, should the Madhyamaka school establish the conventional arising and so on in name? If the conventional arising and so on of the four extremes are established by that reason, it will become a contradictory reason, so it cannot be established. And the conventional arising and so on of dependent (263b) origination cannot be established by that reason, because the reason and the dharma are not different. The establishment of conventional arising and ceasing and cause and effect by such dependent origination is established when there is no examination. If, after examination, the arising and so on of dependent origination are established by the reason of dependent origination, then it will be like an elephant bathing. Because after examination, after preventing the four extremes of arising, if the arising and so on of dependent origination are established, then it is the same as the previous reasoning.
