At the feet of the Lama, I prostrate with unwavering reverence of body, speech, and mind. I shall now slightly analyze the immaculate meaning of the scriptures. In general, regarding the methods of distinguishing the definitive and provisional meanings of the scriptures, the views of various schools differ. Specifically, the Vaibhashikas (the Extensive Commentary School) believe that the Buddha's teachings were spoken in various ways according to the minds of the beings to be tamed, so there are many provisional meanings; while the treatises of the seven Abhidharma collections, such as the Dharma Skandha, are considered definitive. Regarding the objects to be expressed, both the Vaibhashika and Sautrantika (Sutra School) believe that the sutras that explain that consciousness is momentary and indivisible, and that the apprehended object is atomic and indivisible, are definitive sutras. The Yogachara (Mind-Only School) consider the sutras that teach the existence of external objects to be provisional, and the sutras that say that appearances are mind and that teach the three characteristics to be definitive. The Shentong Madhyamikas (Emptiness of Other School) consider the sutras that show the Tathagatagarbha (Buddha-nature) as permanent, stable, and truly established to be definitive, and it has also been said that the intermediate teachings are provisional. However, according to the view of the Second Buddha, the glorious protector Nagarjuna, the glorious Chandrakirti said: 'As the Sugata (Buddha) taught emptiness, know the distinctions of the definitive sutras. From which sutra beings, persons, or individuals are taught, know that all those teachings are provisional in meaning.' There are very many followers who follow the tradition of distinguishing the definitive and provisional meanings by quoting this sutra, and I also wish to follow this. In this context, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) generally quoted a sutra from the Bodhisattva Pitaka (Bodhisattva Collection), saying that there are eight ways to distinguish the definitive and provisional meanings, the first of which is: 'Entering the path is provisional, and entering the result is definitive.' That is, the sutras that show the divisions of the path, such as the six paramitas, are provisional, and the sutras that show the results of the stages, such as the ten bhumis (grounds), and the qualities of the ultimate Buddha, such as the Dashabhumika Sutra (Ten Bhumi Sutra), can be considered definitive. However, since this is a time to distinguish the definitive and provisional meanings common to both sutra and tantra, the following question is raised: 'The three vehicles of guidance, the Bhagavan (Blessed One) has definitely spoken, why not speak of the definitive vehicle that is spontaneously accomplished by cause and effect and does not need to be sought from other Buddhas?' The answer to this is: 'Desiring the cause, after turning the wheel of the Dharma of the cause, a quick path of the Vajrayana (Diamond Vehicle) will appear in the future.' As the sutra says, taking the cause as the path, such as the Paramita Vehicle (Perfection Vehicle) of the sutras, is provisional, and taking the result as the path, the Vajrayana is definitive, I think it is appropriate to understand it this way. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
